Quote to mill disc

Hey guys im looking for a Quote on how much it should cost to have round disc cut from aluminum or stainless im looking to have 1-10 cut if works out ill have more done like 100+

but my local shop wants $175 plus the cost of material does that sound about right or ?

the OD of the disc will be 3/4" with no other machining needed as long as its a fine cut ? im not sure because i never seen a machine in action

I can't help with cost, but I'm pretty sure it varies based on size, tolerance, and surface finish. (Something easy to clamp that can be sawed should be cheaper than something that is hard to clamp and needs to be ground to final size.) Perhaps you should provide more information....

The OD will be 3/4" round disc and the sheet is like 3mm thick by any size that will work best, as long as its a clean round cut i would not need any other tings done to the disc that i no of ?

Tolerances would be very helpful. Is .750" mandatory or is it plus or minus a few thousandths? If it's flexible, then simply buying 3/4" round stock and slicing off disks is fairly easy. Same with the thickness - about .120". Is that a firm number? Finished smooth on one side or both?

It sounds like you specified that they cut disks from sheet. That's more expensive than cutting a disk from the end of a rod, and makes the $175 quote reasonable.

Cutting a disk from a rod is quick and easy, but not always precise. Of course, if you want the sides perfectly parallel, flat and smooth it also pushes the price up.

So what's the deal? Did you ask for any of those things, or were they not specified at all?

Thanks GL, i explained to them what i needed face to face so they knew what i wanted done, i was just checking to see if that was a reasonable quote so i guessing it is.

That's extremely high,imo. Check some of the eBay store metal sellers. $175 for only a couple of cuts?

Sounds like a job for either a laser or a water jet. Thinner metal is harder to machine in older ways.

You pay for setup no matter if you need 1 or 100.

Aluminum machines faster by conventional machines & it machines faster with waterjet. If you don't need stainless the aluminum parts will cost less.

Your description doesn't specify what you need - if you can draw a 3-view (top/side/front) using one of the free 2D programs you can easily get quotes from a number of shops. Without a drawing you may get quotes that are either too high or too low.

Essential info on the drawing includes:
surface finish callout in µ-inches
diameter callout (+/-)
thickness callout (+/-)

That's extremely high,imo.

Prototype machining is expensive & there are lots of shops that will No Quote anything that doesn't make them at least $500-$1000. You're fortunate to have found a shop that will work in such small quantities.

So, I went over to www.bigbluesaw.com and used their online quoting tool.
A 0.75" diameter circle of 6061 aluminum 0.063 (1/16") thick is $1.00 each at qty 100 cut by waterjet.

Great price on 100 discs ... If they meet your three call out specs. Be really certain about this because once they are cut they aren't returnable & they're too light to make good paperweights.
