R2 drop-in heatsink question

Hi All,

I have a couple (2) of these DX drop-ins that I'd like to convert to a bike light:

sku.11836

I have 12V on my bike already, so I'll be running them at that voltage. My plan is to drill holes in an appropriately-sized aluminum box or channel or something, then solder or otherwise affix the aluminum reflectors into the holes so there will be heat tranfer. Will I need to add more heatsinking or cooling fins to this apparatus?

Thanks for any advice,

Dan

I mounted my drop-ins into some scrap aluminum tubing (from an telescoping light. Now that I've upgraded to Li-Ion batteries the tubing gets a little hot, so I'm going to either fill the dead space inside the tube with aluminum foil or a ring of aluminum to get a better path from the drop-in to the outside.

The main point is to get a thermal conductor closer to the pill instead of the reflector, where it is now.

Nice looking light! I'm new to drop-ins. What sort of driver are you using, or does the drop-in take care of that?

A further question- what sort of body do the drop-ins fit?

Hey xiejol - that's a nice looking light! I found some 1" aluminum tubing that the drop-ins fit, and I might try something similar. I guess it will need some more sinking than just the tubes, though.

Offroad - go to the dealextreme.com site, and search for the sku that was listed in the first post. I actually pasted the URL for the drop-in, but I guess that is not allowed anymore. There is a driver in the drop-in for anything from 3 to 18 volts. It is designed for the Surefire P60 or a number of copycat lights.

I'll post pics when I get something mounted up!

Thanks, Dan

Thanks, answered my driver question-

As for the second question- anybody found a body at Dealxtreme the drop-in can be dropped into, other than the Surefire? They have some empty "body" kits but it's not clear which these drop-ins would fit.

just look at the pictures to see if it looks like it has a drop-in. DX dropins all look the same

I got the Ultrafire C1, but that was before I learned about solarforce L2. Now I want L2. Stupid light addiction:scowl:
