I'm looking for a CREE R2 drop in that has multiple modes or like the Dereelight DI.
Unfortunately dereelight only makes it in q5.

Any idea where to get one?

The only module of which I am aware is the 0-100% "3-mode" Q5 at DX. This is a very bright module, and Mev at LightReviews measured it to be slightly brighter than a Fenix T1 with good runtimes. It is really a 15-mode light in six groups. If the UI isn't too complex for you, it's a great module. BTW, rumor has it that most of the R2 modules made in China are actually overdriven Q5 emitters. I have most of them and would agree that there doesn't seem to be much difference in tint or brightness between the Q5 and R2 modules.

the 0-100% feature is kind of like the dereelight DI q5 module , except the DX can only use 1 cell.

looks interesting, but 1 cell only? makes me think twice about buying it since i like to have some flexibility with battery types i use.

That's what I was suspecting, the fact that Dereelight and other reputable manufacturers aren't pumping out R2 modules, but the cheapo manufacturers seem to have no trouble at coming up with R2 emitters...

maybe there's a way for us to tell by looking at the emitter?

doesn't someone make an aftermarket click-switch, that has a low-mode? I thought I read about that here...?

I've read that some of those keep discharging the batteries even when off. no good.

besides, it depends which driver you use, those things might fry the driver or worse.

I ordered a Solarforce L2 with R2 bin a couple of weeks ago from eBay for $30. I haven't received it yet, so I don't know how well it will hold up against my Malkoff M60. It was only $30, and I'm buying it for novelty purpose.

The KD $12.59 one-mode R2 is noticeably brighter than the Solarforce R2 when both are run at 2X16340 (8.4V). The Solarforce is as bright and warmer if you run it at 12.6V. These are both very nice modules, so please don't consider them novelties just because they're great values.

Oh, wrong choice of word. I didn't mean by novelty. I meant that since I've already have two malkoff drop ins ... I probably will not have a need for this one. I bought it mainly because many people consider the SolarForce L2 a very good clone of the 6P and I want to see for it myself.

IMHO the DX R2 drop in is difficult to use for close-distance. It is blindingly bright when shone on a map or paper at night, when your eyes are dilated to darkness. I kid you not... its like.. ZZZING-ZAP, like getting hit with a camera flash... and you're blinded.

I'm thinking about moding my drop in with a smooth reflector and adding that surefire "flip-lens" to diffuse the light for close-range use.

but... its a reeeeally coooool module!! Its a riot, lighting up an entire 150+ yard radius (conservative estimate) at night.

There are a lot of hosts with two-stage clicky tailcaps based on a resistor. You can use a one-mode R2 module in any of these lights and get a two-mode light with a high-low-off or low-high-off UI. I bought a lot of two-stage LumaPower clicky switches last year and find that it isn't very hard to get them into most tailcaps. I often remove two-stage clickys from hosts when I use multimode P60 modules, so this is another source for two-stage switches.

just bought one 1 mode from kai.
price went up from $12.XX to $14.XX but still a good deal.
I might try and build a multimode myself later.

By the way, I checked with cutter electronics today and they have r2s for sale again they told me they have 1200 in stock.
