i did a search but came up empty handed.
wondering what everyone prefers, for their flash light to ramp up or ramp down when first put on and why?
thanks

I think it depends on the situation, really. For example, if I want to preserve my dark-adapted vision then I would want to start low then ramp up. OTOH if for example I were in some sort of emergency situation then I would probably want to start high then ramp down to whatever light level I want.

One reason why I love the UI on the Photon Freedom Micro / X-Light Micro so much is that from an off position it allows both. From off, click and release it comes on high then click and hold to ramp down, release when it gets to the level you want. From off, click and hold to start low and ramp up, release when it gets to the level you want.

I wouldn't mind a torch with dual mode -
a. full power
b. turns on low and ramps up from there.

Kinda like the Fenix L0D with the low-med-hi-SOS when the head is loosened and high-strobe when the head is tightened. But I would prefer to be able to program out the SOS & Strobe and replace the lo-med-hi with minimum ramping up to maximum.

Ramp down. If I'm ever in an emergency I want the most powerful mode to be the first to come up, without having to lose precious seconds I may not have trying to switch modes/ramp.

Both, such as LRI's Freedom UI. But if I had to choose just one, it would be press and hold to ramp up, click for instant high.

I also like the Photon Freedom Micro because of its ability to ramp up and down without turning on the light.

Ramp it up, if I get only one choice. Otherwise, I'll take Photon's options, too, or the programmability of LiteFlux.

ramp up for light discipline/covert ie. SL Sidewinder
ramp down for defense/tactical ie. SF E2DL

I also like the Photon Freedom UI it is the best one available IMO.

Personally prefers the ramp down, it's like choosing to whip out a glock or an AR15...go for the blast

I think we're talking C2H here. I prefer Ramp Down. I save it on the low setting so low comes on first, if I need high, it's one mode switch away.

Both options are important depending on conditions. Manufacturers should work on making both standard to the user with easy UI selection option.

I used to prefer ramp up in my Gladius so it has an instantly available ultra low light level in its 2nd switch setting for discreet occassions and to complement its full power momentray ON at the 4th switch setting.

Nowadays it's more practical to set it to memorize the last light level used in its 2nd switch setting since I use the same low light level almost all the time. :)

Ramp up is generally preferable. The low level will not disturb others as in a restaurant or movie. It is nice to be able to do both. Every once in a while I want full power first.

If you happened to work in profession that requires a flashlight ie LEO etc, then full power is preferred mostly but if you are off duty or a regular joe then low is desireable since high used in many situations would not result in friendly faces ie movie theaters, broadway plays, or restaurants. So with that being said, it really depends on the circumstances. :sssh:

YES. My current big light has a pot on it. I can determine the setting high, low, anywhere, *before* I turn it on and can go up or down with my thumb in about 180 degrees.
When you catch motion out of the corner of your eye and it turns into a a guy moving fast in your general direction it's nice to go full on bright from any position.
