really? This is "turbo" mode?

Help Support Candle Power:

this should really be posted somewhere where new users can have access to...not many people understand the concept and as a result may rate lower on a few lights simply because they aren't twice [or thrice :grin2:] as bright as other lights:shakehead

The problem is--the statement that you quoted isn't true.

Keep in mind as you increase the output you decrease the efficiency and increase the amount of heat. At the higher levels it takes more and more power to get a little more light and you generate more heat. If they made Turbo mode brighter it may generate too much heat for the small light to handle.

Something like the Dereelight C2H sends 1A to the emitter, and it's a small light, but Dereelight calls this a burst mode. The user needs to know when the light is getting too hot and drop to a lower mode or shut the light off if it's getting over heated. Most of the people buying a C2H are flashaholics that can handle this responsibility. Fenix is marketing their lights more towards the masses and probably doesn't want to sell a light that could burn itself up if the user isn't careful with it.

I heard Fenix uses the same head on the L2D/P2D which put out 180 lumens on turbo. That makes me wonder if it is more related to having 3 volts to work with...

After playing more with the light:

1. Looking at the spill beams helps a bunch. The hot spot is not nearly as noticable in light changes as the spill. This is true for both outdoor distant lighting and ceiling bounce. The turbo mode (or just "high" if I mislabeled it) is brighter - no doubt. I would say 1/4 to 1/3 by my eyes, which are already questionable...

2. I really see no need for the turbo/high mode in most circumstances. This light is great on it's first setting. I was in a darkened gymnasium today (don't ask) and the light illuminated the opposite wall and all of the floor between. That's just impressive for a keychain light no matter what mode it's on.

I'm quite pleased overall. Now I just need a wicked thrower to replace my Inova T3. 1 or 2x CR123 would be great. Somewhere around $50. Any thoughts?

Hey, thanks to all for the great comments.
