not too throwy. mostly for close distance cave exploring. he's already got a light picked out for throw, Streamlight PP Lux

Very much want to have AA, $20-$30 price range, good quality beam (probably LED then). these are hard to find, nobody makes a AA $25 headlight.

I have the one jay linked to... I am going to be bringing it along as a backup light for caving, but I would not choose this as an ideal caving light. there are only 2 issues that worry me.
1. it's overly complicated in design, lots of LEDs and 2 buttons and lots of settings, 90% of which are totally unnecessary and just add to the complication of using the light.
2. The buttons are very difficult to locate and use when the light is on your head, or even if it is in your hand in the dark...
3. lack of regulation isn't too big a deal, but is worth mentioning.

however it seems to be reasonably durable, i wouldn't want to smack it against the wall of a cave, but it might actually survive a few wacks.

[edit in] a really decent AA solution would be to get one of these....

and just install something like this: http://www.lighthound.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1768

it would be about half as bright as a good 1W. but would run for a long time, and be in the price range.... might want to ask around to see if there are any compatibility issues with doing this.

the Streamlight enduro / River Rock 2AAA headlamp can't be beat for under $30, and it cosst half that. For a headlamp that's better that also takes AA batteries, you need to start at $50.

I would go with the PT EOS, mine cost around $32 and it is regulated, uses 3 AAA and is very light.

I agree. If you want some throw, ie a decent spot with some spill, a PT EOS with an ims17 reflector mod (much more useful beam, easy drop in mod). If you want a wicked close range light that is more flood, with little spot, a PT Quad.

Yes, I bought both!

I'm very interested in that reflector for the EOS.....where can I purchase one?
Thanks!!!

If a person asks for suggestions of an AA light, why do respondents keep suggesting AAA lights? There are tons of nice AAA headlamps and it's not hard to find them. Good low-cost AA headlamps are harder to find and that's why it's necessary to ask for suggestions when looking for them. The prize of prizes of course is a decent 1AA headlamp but those don't seem to exist.

What he said. An EOS os QUAD in AA would be great but its aaa.

lrp, IMS 17 reflectors can be found for $5 at the Sandwich shoppe and also another CPF memeber is selling them here, I think he is in the dealer section but I'm not sure.

It's a great mod. I'm waiting for a cree star to come in and I will try taht mod too!

I got my PT Corona on sale at my local Gander Mountain retail store for $35. This is a great headlamp, it is the "king" of floody headlamps and offers great runtime as there are many modes of operation to suit your needs. It runs on three AA's, and I have been using rechargables in mine for guilt free lumens.

I also have the PT Quad, and can say that my Corona is brighter and OWNS the Quad on runtime. I think it is worth a look....

You can get the Cree stars cheap from dealextreme.com and photonfanatic in the dealer's section has the ims reflectors. You'll also find this is a duplicate thread as one in the healight section, so you might check that out too.

EOS or APEX plus ims plus cree or seoul= nice headlight

How about picking up 4xAAA Eneloops for 8 bucks, taking 3 of them and sticking them into a PT Eos or Quad and go from there? Rather than bang your head against the wall looking for a sub-30 dollar AA headlight that's inferior.

Sure it's 15 bucks more than your budget ... that's 15 dollars. That's lunch. Like Dave Chappelle says "that's nothin'!"

IMO, i'd do it right the first time, spend the extra 15 dollars and get the state of the art (before the cree editions come out that is) and be done with it.

any of these headlamps ultralight? looking for long life, good output and minimal weight? perhaps i should start another thread.
