What a great piece of recent radio history!

Your best option is probably Eneloop AA batteries, in those 3AA-to-D adapters. Your Nitecore charger can recharge them, and they'll give you decent runtime. There are similar batteries available as IKEA Ladda brand, as well as some of the major battery brands (e.g., Energizer).

As background: you want nickel metal hydride (NiMH) - like the Eneloops - rather than lithium ion rechargeable batteries, because of the different voltages involved. A normal (alkaline) AA puts out 1.5 volts when fresh; NiMH is 1.2 volts which is close enough for nearly everything. By contrast, Lithium ion is 4.2 volts and that much voltage is enough to break many kinds of electronics designed for traditional alkaline batteries.
