I was just at Wally World and picked up a "Nightblaster." A 3 red LED Streamlight Clipmate "knock off" for a mere $7.97. The Clipmate is a light I like very much. The Nightblasters lens, LED arrangement and rubber bezel protector are exactly like the Clipmates.

The Nightblaster's body is round as opposed to the S/L's 3AAA battery conforming body. The Nightblaster (N/B) has a round body that accepts a separate 3AAA battery holder that slides into the N/B's body nicely. A feature I prefer to the Clipmate. The Clipmates can be tough to load batteries and close the compartment once in awhile, because the springs that provide battery tension get in the way. Oh yeah the N/B body assembly is about 1/4" shorter than the streamlight

The clips of the two leds are very similar, both ball and socket type swivel clips that can be removed if need be. The only difference I can tell between the two individual clips is that the N/B's is a bit (1/4") broader. I almost see this as a benefit, since it gives a wider area of grip when you clip it on, say for instance to a ball cap. This is also accomplished by eliminating any bulk. Both lights feel pretty good in the hand, with or without the clip. Another thing I see is a lanyard loop on the N/B. A feature the clipmate doesnt have. This could be useful to hang it around your neck, when you have left the clip and headband behind.

The Olive drab w/ black accents 'blaster comes with a camo headband that is Exactly like Clipmates black headband. The headband comes in handy for certain tasks but I prefer to use the light w/o headband, or even the clip when possible. Probably because of less bulk.

So when I loaded in the 3 Panasonic AAA batteries (included) and switched it on(turning the bezel 1/8 a turn), man was I impressed, wicked bright.

I mean much more intense than my white led clipmates. Of course I realize that I am comparing apples to oranges, but the N/B hurts my eyes more than either of the 2 white clipmates I have. Of course that is accomplished by the highly scientific method of staring at the lights output like an idiot.

I know that clipmates only come in white and green, and the Nightblaster probably only comes in red. This leaves me w/ a simple decision- I don't have to determine which one is better since the N/B comes in a LED color Streamlight dosent have. Go get one of each.

also packaging states:
"up to 100 hrs of battery life"
"weatherproof"

Nice review. I also find the clipmate to be one of the more versatile lights and seemingly quite overlooked.

ramptapult...I bought my father-in-law one of these to use in his heliocopter for night flying/chart reading, and for $7.97 it was a REAL bargain, IMHO. Extremely bright, very solid, and has a very smooth beam. I went back to get one for myself after seeing his turned on, and WalMart was out of them, and hasn't gotten them back since! But I AM gonna keep checking...'cause for $7.97, this is indeed a nice light!

ramp,
I have one exactly like you describe with a blue translucent body, except the LED's are white. The output is identical to the SL. Funny thing is, there is no brand name or writing at all on it. It came in a group of lights I bought. Does yours have a battery holder that comes out (unlike the Clipmate where the batteries just go in the body)? TX

I think I saw those blue ones on eBay(Blue "Clipmate")
while searching through "Led Flashlights". The same fellow was selling the LED torches discussed in this thread: eBay Torches

He also sells (now and then on eBay, though I didn't see any today) the "Spark Plug" LED flashlight and another which looks exactly like the new Streamlight "Keymate" LED torch (both are being sold by Streamlight now). I suspect the manufacturer of the line he's selling may be making those for Streamlight? As soon as Streamlight came out with them I was "suspicious" because they look the same! By the way, another of this manufacturer's torches seems to be sold at Walmat under the "Ray-O-Vac" Adventure series name (3 colored LED torch).

I picked up one of these a few months back and have been very impressed with it. TREMENDOUS red light output with fresh batteries. Mine has help up very well, and if the walmarts around here ever get anymoe I will pick up a couple of spares.

Sigman,
That's the one I have, except a darker blue & no writing. I think I'ld rather get the SL from BG for that price, & not get stuck with $8 for shipping. Although, it might be cheaper to pay the high shipping. When I buy from BG, my bill is seldom less than $60. CAN'T just buy one light!!! 8^} TX

the "Nightblaster" is not a Streamlight clipmate knockoff. it is vice versa.
the streamlight is a nightblaster knockoff.

No matter who followed whom, I wish they had both left out the reflector. Makes a strange 3 arm beam. I had the same problem with my Septor, but that reflector was easy to remove. Not so with this one. TX

OK. I'm not supposed to tell you this yet, but there is a dealer in my area who is is planning on selling these cliplights with special pricing for those who read the review on my site (mostly CPFers!).

I met him at a gunshow here in Charlotte and convinced him that selling them on the web was the way to go.

They will be available in:

1 red LED
1 green
1 blue
1 white
3 white
3 blue
3 red (available in March)

The prices he quoted me are very reasonable and shipping will be the same regardless of quantity (and will be less than you think!). No headband, but batteries are included, all in retail packaging. They're very good quality and very waterproof. The 3 AAA "cartridge" they take is identical to the one in the Streamlight Septor and Trident headlamps.

He's working on getting his website up and running.

More details once I get the go-ahead to post the review for the public eye!

(By the way, he bought them because he is a pilot and wanted to use them in the cockpit. He thought they were so useful he bought a large quantity to make available and sell to anyone who could also find them useful. Strictly an independent dealer.)

I hope so, too. I'm kind-of pushing him to get going on accepting orders before more people come out with this light. He's completely new to the game, but seems to be a reputable chap.

My review of the light I have from him is complete - I'm just waiting for the go-ahead from him to post it. I was really surprised by the quality - I was expecting cheap China cr*p, but it's actually quite good! Only fault I really found was that the beam was a little ringy as a result of either the LED or the reflector, but it was easily tolerable.

Well, here in England led flashlights are not so easy to come by. I got a Clipmate 2 led white with headband from Maplin (an electronics component supplier). It's not labelled as Clipmate, but it almost certainly is. And it is extremely well made.

As to the headband, unless you have more than one head I think you only need one.

I got a 3-white LED Streamlight Clipmate while I was still in the hospital, and I kept it clipped to the steering arm of my electric wheelchair pretty much the whole time. Somewhere I ought to have the headband, but I used the clip most of the time. The retail card does have a few references to the Septor inside, so I assume the Septor is another 3-AAA light that looks and works a lot like the Clipmate.

Well, I have a single green Nightblaster, and like it a lot, except that I broke the clip... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif Love to have a couple more, with the swivel ball and clip, they're pretty handy.

Craig - let me know if you want the headband and I'll mail it to you. I have a couple of headlamps already and don't need it.

BTW - I'm STILL waiting for the guy to get back to me on selling these things. The review has been sitting in the queue so long I don't even know what I typed... I just sent him another e-mail.

Re: Red Clipmate: Your input please!

OK. Just got the latest from Greg - He's looking at only stocking the 3-LED versions of the red, blue and white clip-on LED lights, but may have some of the others available until his next order. He's going to be in town this weekend so I'm really going to put a bug in his ear about selling these on the web instead of just at gun shows.

Why am I trying so hard to get him to sell these on the web? His last pricing structure was going to be like this:

$9 for 1-LED vs. the show price of $12
$12.50 for the 3-LED vs. the show price of $16.
S&H USPS will be $3.50 regardless of quantity.

I think that's pretty darn good! Sound reasonable? Input appreciated! The more ammo I have the better. If this doesn't sound good to CPF, he shouldn't bother selling them...

BTW, These cliplights do not come with headbands.

Quickbeam, do the red ones run on 2 or 3 AAA's? Three cells seem like too much voltage for red LED's.

Either way I would be interested in a couple.
