Reflector or Lens for 5W Cyan

I have a couple of 5W Cyan LS "batwings" that I am "playing" with.
When I was ordering LEDs Future did not have them available with the optics.
What is the best reflector or lens to use to collimate the 5W? Is the standard Luxeon lens the same for the 1W and 5W units? Can I just mount the 5W with an extra lens assembly from a dead 1W LS/O? Thanks for any help.---Marc

Hey Mic, check the shape of the bulb. If it is rounded, it is a Lamb. If it is slightly flattened at the top, it is then a true Bat. But like Doug said, I didn't know they made'em in Bats. If it's a Lamb, and my own experience with them is any indication, a reflector will provide the better beam by a significant margin.

I agree with Doug and Mr. Bulk. You have a HD there. The collimator will give you a narrow beam with a very appearant "grill" unless you lift the optic off and take the LED out of focus. This will also allow for a bunch of wasted side spill. A slightly dimpled reflector will give you the best results, IMHO.

Darn. You guys are right! I thought that they were batwings but on closer inspection the domes are HIGH. They are Lams. Oh well, another rookie mistake by me.
I will follow your advice and try a reflector. Is there any particular reflector that you would recommend.

I would recommend that if possible you use a reflector that was designed for a lamp envelope similar in diameter to the LED. That is to say somewhere between 1/4" and 3/8" in diameter. The other consideration is identifying where in the reflector the original focal mass of the light source resided. You will want to position the die of the LED in the same location if possible. This will likely require either chopping the bottom of the reflector off or elevating the LED on a pedestal. The reflector from a P60 ot P61 can give you a pretty decent beam. The standard sized mag reflectors will also yield a reasonable beam.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I haven't tried the reflector yet, but yes the optics are the same for 1W or 5W emitters. The HD's were intended to use the new style (flat-top) collimator.
