restoring an old torch

I have been given an old 2D metal torch, made by GEC (the English company not the American GE)
circa 1960's...
The torch is finished in chromed metal and has an octagonal focussable head which screws off to reveal an MES bulb.
It's a well made torch, but I think that battery electrolyte has leaked into the switch mechanism... I cannot get it to power up even though the bulb is good.
The WD40 idea isn't an option as the bulb holder is mounted on what looks like compressed paper or thick card. In working order this torch would probably qualify as a vintage torch and is probably quite rare.
Any suggestions?

Look carefully at how the switch operates. IE is it internal or does it slide a part that you can see.

My buddy gave me an old Rayovac industrial 3D that needed some sandpaper here and there to be happy.

i have this antique eveready brass torch that my dad bought a few years back, and i had to use metal polish on all the contacts before it would light up properly

I'm impressed with your huge list of torches, Joe!
The contacts apear to be inside the switch itself, not inside the torch bodytube.
I shall get some WD 40 onto the switch tomorrow!
