I'm about to order a Romisen RC-N3, is there any reason "not" to get it with 2-modes and the XP-G R4 emitter?

I would probably be using it mostly with AA's due to run time but could also use CR123A as well.

I have it and I can't think of any reason not to get it, unless you need the low to actually be low. There isn't that much difference between the two settings (I think this is common to all the upgraded Romisen's on shiningbeam), it's more like high and higher. I really like mine though. I gave my single mode Q5 version to my girlfriend and replaced it with this one. Very bright and I like the beam. So unless you need a low setting, I think it's a very good buy.

Thanks, Bryan at shiningbeam.com indicated the Q5/Q3's are better at throwing. Did you notice this and if so was the R4 any better on flood?

I have the 2 mode R4 in gray as well and it's an awesome choice. Mine lasted close to 3 hours on high with fresh duraloops, but I think if you switched the batteries around half way through you would get a little longer runtime. It seems that when you have 2 batteries one always gets more draw then the other.

I think the future batch should have a lower mode because I remembered asking why is the low so high. Bryan said it was his fault because he paid extra to removed the strobe/sos, he should of have them program the low mode a bit lower, but he forgot.

I have the Q5 single mode and I would bet you won't notice much difference between the R4 and Q5 as far as throw. The R4 is the way to go with primaries. It Has Longer run time, Nicer beam, and lights up a larger area. However if your going to use a Rechargeable CR123 then you would want the single mode driver to be safe.

The difference in throw isn't that big at 3 volts. (IMHO) now you get to 6 or more volts and it is much more noticeable. The R4 Should be good and very useful to around 100ft. Hope this helps. I love my Q5 and still carry it all the time.

Technically I think Bryan's right, and the R4 does seem a bit more floody to me. Comparing them side by side outside you might notice the Q5 being the better for throw, but it's not significant enough for me to notice with the RC-N3. I haven't compared them for throw outside though. I use mine when I need a bright light indoors, or around my smallish garden and it has more than enough throw for that.

I have the 2 mode R4. The difference in brightness between the two modes is so minimal that determining which mode I'm actually in takes a few switches between the two, depending on conditions. I find this rather frustrating and if I had known that before I bought it I would have chosen the single mode unit, if it is true that it is slightly brighter than the 2 mode I have, even if it were a tad more expensive rather than slightly cheaper by a buck or so, IIRC. At least with that light you are getting slightly higher output (it is said), you always know what mode you are in 'cause there only is one, and in theory the run time is consistent and you don't have to use complex math to determine how much time is left based on what percentage of the time you were in each of the two modes (that is if you can even tell which mode you were in!)

Not a big deal and a good light overall though. The added run time potential, [does anyone know how long?] could be important to some, more so than my slight quibble.

if it is true that it is slightly brighter than the 2 mode I have

Bryan responded in an email just prior to my order, that the two mode on high is the same brightness as the single mode. I guess you have a 50/50 chance of having a bit more run time then.

Received mine last night, nice quality and very fast shipping from shiningbeam.com. Very nice spill with a bright center, and it will throw far enough for my purposes. I agree about the modes though, way too close together, I probably would have just ordered the single mode if I'd known just how close.

Ran 2.5hrs on high with a couple of Duracell AA Alkaline cells that had been in a drawer for some time. After that it would cycle on and off at a much lower brightness.
