i showed off my new 6aa-2d rop to a friend of mine today. with freshly charged but rested batteries i shined it off his deck, very impressive when compared to 3d mag which of course i knew. (no 3d mag available so used medium setting on my 2aa fenix cree-pretty close). however, when compared to my magcharger1160, it actually seemed as bright. i mean the hotspot was brighter, but spill not quite as good but very very close.

the rop of course has medium stipple but we both agreed lumen output was identical. someone help me out. should i be running 7 batteries? is my voltage saggin cause i should be running subc-subd in a 4 batt mag? isn't this suppose to be a 7.2 volt light. i don't want to buy a 8aa-2d light now, but can i make a rop brighter with my 3d mag? help me out!

It's that you are lacking battery capacity. If you wanted to get the most lumens from your ROP, I would suggest using a 4D light with 6 subC's. My 2D ROP with 2x18650's puts out a bit over 600 lumens on fresh cells, where as my friends set-up with the 6 subC's puts out 800+.

Like mentioned above, you could do the resistance fixes. In a ROP, they should give you another ~50 lumens or so...not bad for something that costs almost nothing to do except your time and effort.

The ROP suck A LOT of juice under load. Thats why there is such a big difference in output depending on battery capacity. Like I said, my ROP puts out 600+ at the start, but within a couple minutes it drops down closer to ~500.

I plan on trying a pair of AW's new "C" cells in my 2D. If I can get them to work, the ROP will be brighter than it is now with my 2x18650's.

And just FYI, my ROP once the batteries have about 5min of burn-time on them, appears no brighter than my MagCharger with the 1160 as well. Also keep in mind that the MC60 with a fully charged battery pack will put out almost 500 lumens...so it is no slouch :)

ok, looks like i should fix my spring for one thing. how do i do that? it was not clear to me in the link provided.

also is 9 aa good enough for a 1185? can i put it in a fivemega 9aa-3d in a magcharger until i have a 3d maglite that can take bi pin bulb or until i can find potted 1185's.

what is the best aa rechargeables for handling these high load lights? can i actually have a brighter light just by using 6 different brand of batteries?

Do a search for the resistance fix. As for batteries look at silverfox's NI-MH battery shootout. I would recommend getting some eneloopes though as they are excellent at supplying lots of current plus you get the added bonus of low self discharge. Yes the batteries can make a huge difference to the brightness of these hotwires.

what is cbp1650?
Sorry if this comes off wrong. I'm not a "use the search button, jerk" kind of guy.
Search for the following terms.
ROP (there's a master thread)
CBP1650. The IB2000 has superceded the CBP1650s.
Switch fix
Tailspring fix.
If you're having a problem with the fixes. Send them to me and I'll do them for you. No charge of course.
I had "visualization" issues with the switch until I saw one done properly.
Once you see it done it's perfectly clear.
Welcome aboard. It's a bright ride.

P.S. CBP1650 = Cheap Battery Packs 1650 mAh NiMH AA cell.
go to www.cheapbatterypacks.com. They've got great prices on some great cells.

wow, thank you for that offer. i had read a little about the cbp1650 and saw they seemed to hold up well under load but if 1650 is their ma, they just won't last long will they? i will look into ib2000.

Let me know if you want me to do the mod.
Anyway.
Your only options beyond the CBP1650s (which, I believe, has been discontinued) are twofold.
Without boring: IB2000 AA cell in a 6AA-2D carrier in a 2D Mag body, or 6 1/2Ds in a 4D Mag body.
With Boring: CBP2500 A cell without a bettery carrier (but you'll have to have a pack built) in a 2D Mag body.
