I got my sanyo 2100mah batteries in the mail today and I popped 'em into the rayovac 1 hour charger/toaster and it totally outdid itself this time. Normally the batteries will get hot during charging, but this time it did something that kinda scared me. The sanyo batteries were so hot that I literally could not hold them without fear of burning myself. To top it off, they did not hit the normal 1.4-1.42volts that I've come to expect from my NiMh's. A couple were around 1.32v and the other 2 were around 1.38. I dont know if this is something to be worried about, but it seriously does bother me as they got that hot without fully charging. Anyways, I've charged tons of batteries before with this charger and never got that big of a surprise. Anybody have experience with the sanyo 2 hour charger? Maybe its time to upgrade..I heard it doesnt get the batteries hot.

It sounds like your brand new batteries aren't going to last very long. I would highly recommend purchasing one of these.

You have to "season" new Nimh's a few times (3 to 5) by slowly charging and discharging them before using them in a super fast charger like the Rayovac 1 hour. After that they should work fine, although there is now a more gentle "fast" charger out there than the Rayovac, which also has a slow cycle: the Maha MH-C401FS

Any battery combination plus a Rayovac 1-hour charger is a potential fire hazard... The PS4 is an insane pressure cooker, and batteries that are charged at that temperature would, at the very least, die MUCH quicker than its rated charge cycles, and at the most, explode or leak on you, as it had done to my neighbor when he used it...

I've also had problems with the PS4. Sometimes it shuts off, other times it doesn't shut off, which is even worse. I've had it destroy batteries from overcharging.

I will only use it with older NiMHs that I don't care about that much, and I won't leave it alone while charging for fear of an explosion. If it stays on too long, I'll pull the batteries and voltmeter them. Im my opinion, I would not buy this charger. Get the Maha mentioned above. It's next on my list.

I've had this problem too. I think the ROV charger is supposed to shut off when it detects that the battery voltage is dropping, which happens when the battery is fully charged. Occasionally, mine has apparently not detected this, which resulted in scorchingly hot batteries. Its even melted the shrink wrap covering off a couple of batteries.
I like the speed of the ROV charger and use it because I can quickly "top off" my batteries in 15-20 minutes. Still, I would never leave it unattended.

I just got some Duracell AAA 750 mah batteries and I didnt get a full charge the first time. This cell decided to come back to life after being at 0 volts...Anyways I charged it once and it got up to 1.32 volts. I put it in for a second round. After it was done charging I put it on the 'ol voltmeter and it was 1.46 volts. I really hadnt had a problem with my cheapo green 1 dollar cells, they always went up to around 1.42-1.43..

Anyways after hearing the horror stories about batteries blowing up, and shrink wrap melting I think I'm going to buy the maha.

Just to make sure, is there a better charger out at this point than the maha or is there a product coming out real soon that is going to be better? I dont want to buy this charger and find out a month later that a better charger came out.

LoneRebel, the Maha charger is pretty good. I myself use the Quest Q2 Plus, which is also a very good charger. I personally stay away from the "ultra fast" chargers...but some people like 'em.

The MAHA is the best thing going right now, no idea about down the road though. I've always had good service from Thomas Distributing, but you can get the combo for a couple bucks cheaper from this eBay seller. They say that they drop ship directly from Thomas Dist. I haven't bought anything from them and have no affiliation, though they do have good (if few) feedbacks. Hope this helps.

Pretty much, the Maha is top dog right now...

I like the features of the IPower FC501, but I haven't tried it yet, and don't know if any CPFers have either...

Falcon, yeah that ipower charger sounds like it might be good. Wish somebody would write a review. There is no mention of it outside of thomas distributing when searching google & google groups.
