I require 10mm white 160K+ mcd @ 20mA single chip LEDs.

In July 2007 I was able to purchase 160K mcd LEDs on Ebay.
I purchased 10mm white Super Bright 160K mcd @ 20mA LEDs from the "carleds" company.

Unfortunately, the brightest white 10mm LED on Ebay these days is 140K mcd -- which is not bright enough for use in an image projector.

Any help is much appreciated.

ebay full of 280k mcd .5w and 360k mcd 1w 10mm leds.
but they are not 20ma. but for projector it shouldn't matter.
actually i had those 160k mcd, 12* angle 10mm leds, they looked like 5mm led die in 10mm housing,
what kind of projector do you use those leds in??

don't always trust what sellers tell you, one seller rated his 5mm leds at 55k mcd, lol, yea right, they sure were 55k.

I have tested many ebay seller's LEDs and nothing has been impressive. Way overstated intensity, overstated life. At 30ma continuous current, the LEDs faded to 70% light output in only 72 hours.

The Nichia and Cree LEDs have been running for thousands of hours and are brighter. Quality LEDs are worth it.

Left is a Cree LED, Right is one of the better ebay LEDs. The ebay LED is new (not faded yet), it is bluer and dimmer. Seller states this is 55cd LED. My light meter rates it at 15cd. The Cree is a 23-28 range binned LED. I have tested crees to around 35 cd (32-39 cd bin).

btw, when you say "kmcd" is like saying kilo, milli candelas. Since kilo cancels milli, just sy "cd".

I would say if you want more output than a standard 5mm LED it is time to go with a cree or rebel and just underdrive it instead.

I've not looked into 5mm/10mm LEDs for sometime now, is this the brightest 10mm available these days or do they come any brighter?

We've been through this before. The form factor does not lend too well for dissipating heat and these LEDs are made by the bottom feeders. Nichia and Cree know better. Go with a power LED or, if space permits, a cluster of good 5mm LEDs.

Hi alpg88,

I noticed you mentioned that you "had" some 160K mcd white 10mm LEDs @ 20mA. Do you have any left? I require 30-200 LEDs.

The multi-chip 10mm LEDs will not work for my prototype image projector. (e.g., a 5chip LED will create 5 images on a wall, since each light chip creates a distinct projected image).

And I just recently purchased the brightest 10mm white LED I could find on Ebay, rated by the seller at 140K mcd. However, the 160K mcd 10mm LEDs (which I purchased in July 2007 from "carleds.hk" on EBay) are still about 30-50% brighter than the newly purchased LEDs.

Unfortunately, I cannot locate the person or company that sold me these LEDs.

Hi JohnR66,

I have not tried the Cree or Nichia LEDs. Do these get hot and require a heatsink?

Name a good supplier with low cost Cree or Nichia LEDs so that I can check these puppies out.

THanks,
Ken

Ken,
I can send you some for free. You do have to pay shipping which is $2 to most locals. A well off CPF member appreciated my LED tests and sent me thousands of 5mm Cree LEDs to test and for my own use. No way can I use them all so I offer them to CPF members for the cost of shipping. I can send in up to 25 LEDs to stay under 1 oz.

Anyone who wants 5mm cree white and amber 5mm LEDs should PM me. (Don't use the visitor messaging function as I may miss it)

So people don't think I blowin' smoke, here is nice new unopend silver bag of white "neutral cool" tint and a really nice brightness bin.

i have not seen any 10mm brighter than 1w, for a good reason. just like john 66 said, heat becomes a problem, i ran a .5w of a small 3.6v li ion cell from my camera, and in 10 sec legs became too hot to hold .
i don't even know how to properly heat sink them, normally you want metal to metal contact for good conduction, but in this case you can't you'll short the led, 160cd or 140 cd don't have that problem, they don't heat up.
1 cree xp-e pr xpg will make a lot more light than array of 5 or 10mm, (for the size) that if you require 1chip led, or you can go sst90, 1 of them will be brighter than pound of your 160cd leds.

Thanks for the LED offer. But how do I pay you the $2 for shipping? I tried to find some means to email you in private through the CPF website, but I get a draconian message reading: disabled feature.

How about paypal -- but I'll need your account name? And I'm not sure if you're willing to plaster it publically on this site.

THanks,Ken

you need a few posts before PMs are enabled for you, not sure how many but it is to prevent spambots etc.
