Does anyone know of any company that makes a belt that would be suitable for self defense? I'm not talking about belts that conceal a hidden edged weapon. I'm thinking more in terms of a belt buckle that could be swung around.

For those of you familiar with the martial arts, I'm wondering if something that could be used like the Japanese manrikigusari, manriki chain (basically a 37" chain with 2 weights at the end), or Chinese sectioned chain whip ( kind of sections of steel bar connected by short lengths of chain) is manufactured by any company. Sifu Y. C. Wong of San Francisco was famous for his expertise with this weapon. I actually trained with these weapons years ago, and got pretty good with them. A friend actually volunteered to let me hit him in the back of his leg to see how effective these weapons would be. Obviously, I didn't want to hurt my friend, so I hit him with maybe a 50% power swing. He went down, and basically didn't want to get up again!

I'm familiar with Bladeriggers V-Gar system. Although it looks like a cool system that is virtually undetectable, I'm afraid the law will view it as a concealed garrote. In other words, I would not like to be wearing one if I'm ever pulled over by the local authorities!

The Self Defense Belt sold by ExpeditionDepot.com looks interesting. The thing I like about it is it appears to be just a regular belt, albeit with a heavy belt buckle. Does anyone own one of these? Is it fast to deploy? Comfortable to wear? Do you think it would be useful in a defensive situation?

Bruise, your link is not working. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have no experience with self defense belts and have never seen one, I cannot imagine how this should work? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif How the heck are you going to deploy the belt quick enough to defend yourself from someone who tries to wressel you on the ground? Doesn't it take way too much time to get that thing ready to go? If I would tell my brother to hit me with his belt, I would have poked him in his ear several times before he would have his belt ready for action. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif Other than that you might have to make sure your pants are riding tight so they won't drop down while swinging that belt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

I am looking forward to some more information from peoole who have skills/experience with self defence belts as I just cannot imagine how this should work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif There must be some better - more effective - ways for SD!

Besides a heavy buckle there isn't much about it I think.
They state that for "ultra-fast" deployment you should wear the belt outside the loops, thus rendering it useless as a belt IMHO... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

This is too funny /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif, did you watch the Survival Belt in Action - Demo where that guy is swinging the belt like someone...aehhm...someone who gets paid for taking not only his belt off... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

I wouldn't spend atleast 46$ for that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

Heck! If I yanked my belt off, I'd have a cell phone and two flashlights on the ground and my pants around my ankles in no time! Did I mention that I wouldn't have a clue what to do with it either? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif No offense intended here! I think to those trained in the martial arts, just about anything can be used as a weapon! I knew a fellow who never tied his shoes. One day a friend gave him some grief about it and from 20' away, my friend suddenly found a shoe stuck where his legs come together. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif This particular fellow who looked like a slight Bruce Lee was rumored to enjoy getting into it with a handfull of Marines from the local Camp Pendelton from time to time. I find this thread interesting but without subtitles, likely a foreign film that I would have no hope of understanding. Sorry, carry on.............

I'm with Don on this - whipping my belt off would result in a series of crashing noises as my cellphone, Firefly, and keys hit the ground, followed shortly by howls of laughter as my pants followed. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

Maybe the defensive method involved here is that the opponent would die of laughter? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hahaha.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Interestingly if you go to the above website, it has this to say about belts...

"You might be carrying improvised weapons on your body without even knowing it. An excellent weapon is a sturdy leather belt. The leather tip can be used in whipping strikes, while the buckle end can be used as a flail. The belt could also be folded in half and used like a short stick. Defensively, we can use any of the trapping and choking methods practiced with the rope to our advantage."

I think it's pretty obvious there are much better weapons than leather belts and flashlights. Unfortunately, I can't get a CCW and a class 4 for carrying a M203 around town.

I guess I'm a bit vain because I never carry any flashlights, multitools, PDA's, etc. on my belt outside of work. I figure women who see you carrying all that stuff are going to peg you for a geek. Plus if you wear a jacket, putting all that gear on your belt just makes you look fat.

I have heard from a guy with one of the Bladerigger V-Gar belts that swears he can get the cable/titanium weight out of that belt in a flash.

Link to ExpeditionDepots Defense belt should work now.

A sincere thanks for honest replies about the self defense belt concept.

Self Defense Belt Demo

LOL, you guys were right about the Self Defense Belt In Action Demo. First of all, the blue screen background of the Great Pyramids is totally inappropriate. I mean, the demo should have taken place on a street, a bar, or some other type of urban setting where people get jumped.

The guy demonstrating the belt - well, let's just say he was terrible. It's pretty obvious that he has zero training in using this type of weaponry. He did remind me more of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever than anything else.

If you haven't checked out the demo, you really should! I got a bigger chuckle out of it than the last two Adam Sandler movies I saw!

Re: Self Defense Belt Demo

Umm... if you want something for self defense, get some pepper spray or a CCW and a handgun. I don't think attackers are going to recoil in fear when you take off your belt. Depends on the music I guess... :P
