Here's an interesting link (http://www.shiningbeam.com/servlet/the-212/Romisen-RC-dsh-N3-CREE-R4/Detail).
This is a romisen RC-N3 with a special R4 emitter... claims to be nearly twice as bright as the standard romisen. otherwise its a standard Romisen RC-N3, which is like $16 at DX. Claims 280 LED lumens (presumably emitter lumens  )
Its only $27.50 shipped.

so two questions: Has anyone used this light? Is it good? Most notably, is the brightness "fenix-level"? or is it more like a standard Romisen? has anyone compared it to a standard romisen of similar stature (anything taking 1x123a or 2xaa)?
How should it compare to my Current Luxeon Rebel MiniMag, my current 2xaa flashlight? (Old i know :p)

R,

If you do a search in this forum for Romisen N3 you'll find LOTS of info regarding the Shining Beam versions and DX/KD versions.

Long story short; for the $$ and size the N3 is a bargain no matter what emitter its packing. I've handled both the "cool" bin Q5 and "warm white" Q5 versions, both will absolutely smoke the MM.

Use search, its your best bet to find MORE info than you imagined.

Shiningbeam's R4 and Q5 versions are both significantly brighter than the stock version from DX. I've had both, I gave my girlfriend the Q5 and got myself an R4 version. I don't think you'll be dissapointed with the amount of light they put out (or the quality for the money).

thanks guys.
:)
I'm just starting with lights on a limited budget :/ so having a nice bright R4 light for this price would be good... i will buy it shortly. :paypal:

Remember that DX lumen ratings are usually total crap. They are not just emitter ratings, but ratings at the highest conceivable output with maximum driven amperage.
The lights are usually driven anywhere from less to much less, making the ratings very unreliable.

Lumen ratings from shiningbeam and goinggear and itp, etc are a lot more believable and are usually emitter ratings that the light is driven at. Higher end lights like surefire, etc give the real OTF lumen ratings.

I bought two of these RC-N3 with Cree XR-E Q5...two-mode...long story short, i don't really like the feel on this model. the low-mode is not low enough, the 2 modes are not really much different.
I don't think that it gets better with the xp-g r4..but it's not a bad light.
