Hey guys

Since I keep hearing incandescent bulbs do not need heatsinking the way LEDs do, I had this idea. First off, is it really correct? Or would stuff end up melting?

I want to put the LF EO-9 D26 module in a regular Nitrolon SF G2, firstly just for fun but also to save weight compared to an aluminium light with a heavy sinked LED module in it. I just want to know if the excessive trapped heat will end up causing any dangers or ruin my batteries. I'll be using safe LiMn's, but maybe also one of their EO-6es with CR123s if it works out.

Anyone got any ideas? There's probably a reason I don't see any G2s with LF high-output bulbs, but I want to ask anyway.

I used the HO-9 in my G2 for a month or two, it was only used in short bursts so the lens is still good, I suspect the EO-9 would be fine as well if used in short bursts(eg 1min-2mins at a time). The batteries should be fine, and LiMn batteries are considered safe as they do not vent with flames or explode.

You could also try swapping out the lens for a UCL lens, I can't remember who sells them though.

Aha, so the stock lens is the only sticking point? I'll make sure to swap that out then.

It takes the same bezel rings and lenses as a 6P, right?

I would second this recommendation. I bought a few older, used Surefire (the bezels were all rounded) and some had a dimple on the lens right below where the bulb sits (they were all incans) so a new lens would be a highly recommended upgrade.

Check out Overready they carry the UCL lens.

Pricewise, for less than the price to buy the glass lens and the bezel ring tool, you can just buy a Surefire Z44 bezel new or used time to time in the CPF Marketplace. You could also get a Solarforce L2 head at Lighthound for $9.

Appreciate the suggestion, but I want to stick with the Nitrolon for academic reasons - I want to see how lightweight I can make a 2xCR123 pocket rocket.

I just measured all my modules and the P60 is as expected lighter than all the others at 14 grams. However, there is no potting visible, it looks completely bare and hollow.

The LF EO-9 clocks in at second place with 20 grams, and the potting goodness is visible where the springs attach. Good for ruggedness.

My unpotted Nailbender SST-90 trails the EO-9 closely at 22 grams - I can only guess that it would be a different story if this was a potted module.

A Malkoff M61 came out to play as well just for giggles, I knew it would be a slug. 36 grams, and it is felt in the hand pretty well. I'm not sure if all the brass is strictly necessary, but it's probably overengineered. I've been running the older M60 in a 40-60C engine room for a few months (got its share of knicks, falls, chemicals and oil too) without a single issue, so I guess the price one pays for this weight pays dividends when it counts.

In any case I want to build this G2 rocket just for fun, with complete disregard for practicality or common sense. :naughty:

I hear you about a lightweight light. With the Malkoff's in my G2 and 6P I can really feel the weight difference. They are front end heavy.
People complain about the performance of the now discontinued Surefire P60L but heavy it is not. The incan bulbs are fairly lightweight to most of the heat sinked LED drop-ins.

The G2Z comes with a pyrex lens instead of the G2's lexan... and, personally, I like the body better. I've been looking at the LF bulbs for mine, but probably just going to upgrade to a P90 bulb powered by IMR 16340s.
