I love my M6. It has incredibly impressive throw and beam quality but it's still small and light enough to fit in my coat pocket. I now always tend to take it with me when I go out for a walk at night.

However, there's one small thing I would like to change and that's why I am asking for advice.

The textured shapes on the handle have quite sharp edges where the planes of metal intersect. It's fine with gloves on but uncomfortable to the bare hand.

Are all M6 handles like this? Or is it an artifact of this one example?

Can anyone recommend a way to take the sharpness off the edges without ruining the HA surface? How deep is the anodized coating?

All I want to do is to round off the sharp edges a bit. The M6 is truly a thing of beauty and I don't want to mess it up.

The only thing I can think of is to get some of that plastic dip coating used for dipping tool handles. Apply with a disposable brush that may help. I would only be guessing here but I can't imagine the coating being thick enough you could take the edge off and still have some coating left. Maybe somebody here wil know for sure.

I think HA is .005 inch [or less] in thickness, so I don't think you can remove any burs without damaging the HA finish.

I just checked my M6 and it does not feel that uncomfortable to the bare hand ... maybe you need to talk to Surefire about replacement.

I woldn't recommend attempting to file or round off the edges either. I say call Surefire because it shouldn't have an over agressive feel like that.

all surefires have rather aggressive knurling, which is made even more aggressive with the HA coating /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's not the aggressive knurling. I have other HA Surefires and am familiar with the HA knurling. It's the edges, like where the sides come up and meet the tops of the knurled raised areas on the M6 handle. Some of these edges seem excessively sharp. And the sharpness doesn't seem necessary from a "better grip" standpoint.

ok i think i get what you mean....maybe the sharp edges will wear down with use?

The knurling on all my HAIII Surefires were rough with first few days of use. Either its the oils in my hands or rounding of the knurled edges make it smooth to the hand. I don't find it a bit aggresive even when its new.

not necessarily use, but just carrying it around often enough should wear it down. i know i handle my lights a lot, even if i don't turn them on all that often for fear of running down the batteries /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

penguin, if i'm not wrong its not possible unless you physically modify the battery carrier, because each battery fits into its own slot.

chamenos,

Does anyone really use the M6 that often?

As what mporter said, he tends to carry it for night walks. If you are a flashaholic, night walks are more of a ritual /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You mean to tell me that "normal" people still take walks during the day? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think someone smart enough would have figured I meant taking night walks for a flashaholic is something not to be missed daily and has nothing to do with non-flashaholics and day walk. Period.

Recently I became a flashaholic and started buying and testing flashlights. (My cover is that I am working on an article about flashlights.) Nevertheless, here is what I have become:

I eagerly await it to get dark.
I grumble about streetlights.
I applaud the town turning off the lights in the park near my house.
I find myself complaining about the moon being too bright.

Or maybe it was that vampire bat bite...

Have you thought about taking up cement work? Installing driveways and sidewalks will do wonders for toughing up your hands so you won't mind carrying the M6.

Hello Mporter,

I have a suggestion, perhaps you could pass around your M6 and we could all check it out.

I know I would be willing to help smooth the rough edges by carrying it around for awhile...

Good suggestion. I'll put it in my to do list along with looking at the sun in order to condition my retina to make the M6 output seem less dazzling. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
