Hey,

I have an SF G2 Nitrolon with the KR1 rechargeable conversion with body extension for the rechargeable batt. Is there any reason I can't put 3 123 cells in the barrel with the extension, put a battery spacer in to keep it at 9 volts, and use a P90 lamp assembly (9P/Z3/C3)? Also, I have thought about the old Lexan lens in the bezel, and would change it out to a G2Z bezel for the 9 volts to avoid worrying about melting. (Forgive me if this has been discussed before, I couldn't find it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Welcome to CPF.

This would work, you can't go wrong by swapping the original G2 bezel with the G2Z bezel - you would also be on the save side regaring melting the lexan. On the other hand I have used a 9P with the old classic lexan lensed bezel without any problem, of course that one is metall and transfers the heat better than Nitrolon. Just try how it works and get a G2Z pyrex bezel in case it does melt.

You could get one of SureFire's 123A dummies - a Z20 - and cut it into the needed lenght to accomodate the 3 cells inside the G2R body.

You might also do a search as there have been several people who were successful and happy with that mod.

edit: It took me some time to find the original thread, but here it is, another one here , but no pictures there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

It should not be a problem on your lens. If not the Z3 that comes packaged with a Lexan lens initially would always be melting. Just take note not to leave the light on in your bag or pocket for too long a time as heat trapped in there would melt the lens.

The cool thing about the G2 with the body extension is the lock-out capability, even though the stock G2 tailcap doesn't lock-out. Just give the two pieces (main barrel and body extension) a half twist apart and the light won't go on. The light serves well right now but the rechargeable battery fades quickly even though it's as bright as 2 fresh 123's initially. I'm looking forward to my 105 Lumen setup.

I've gotta say it again: The amount and depth of experience and valuable resources on this board is so detailed, it's absolutely essential for anyone with even a passing interest in lights. THANKS!

No problem - you are welcome. And keep us updated on your impressions and findings. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hi sween1911, do you know you can also lock out your G2 by turning the bezel out slightly? Just a suggestion in case you decide to go with a lighter or smaller package and does not need the extension.

Andy,

Never thought of that! GOOD CALL! I do have a G2Z tailcap, and it works, but it doesn't seem to fit as cleanly on the G2 body as the standard cap. Thanks for the great tip! I'm planning on keeping the various parts (extension, P60 lamp, P90 lamp, rechargable batt, extra 123's etc etc) together in a kit for maximum flexibility. I've also already added a clip from a Benchmade knife to the housing of my G2. When I get all this junk together, I gotta get my hands on a digital camera and post a pic of the layout. Thanks!

This brings up a question that rumored inside my brain for some time. As it is known the G2Z is outfitted with a LOTC while the G2 doens't have one. Somehow eventhough the two lights look very similar it was reported that the G2Z LOTC does not work 100% on the G2. If I would upgrade a G2Z with the rechargeable kit and add the AN14 adapter I would need to use the supplied LOTC from the G2Z and it should work in that constellation.
The question is if the G2 could indeed be outfitted with the LOTC from the G2Z in combination with the AN14?

Could someone -as I don't have the parts- check if my thesis is correct? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I have that setup right now with the KR1 rechargeable kit. The LOTC from the G2Z fits and works on the G2 with or without the body extension.

That being said, I just don't think it looks/feels right. For one, (at least with the one that I have) for the lock-out feature to work, you have to unscrew the tailcap quite a bit until it's rather loose. The space between the cap and barrel just doesn't look as aesthetically workable as the standard cap. Best bet, IMHO, when using the body extension is revert to the standard G2 cap. Just a SLIGHT unscrewing of the main barrel and the extension will lock it out, PLUS you don't have to "re-calibrate" the position of the tailcap. Just set the tailcap where you want it, unscrew the body for lock-out storage. When you go to use it, just tighten the body and the tailcap is still adjusted for momentary use. Just a fine point, but it's convenient.

Like or love it, the tailcap is only a few bucks and a good addition to your setup for maximum flexibility. I bought G2Z LOTC's for two friends that I bought G2's for Xmas.

I hope you do find pleasure with your G2 as much as I found pleasure using my G2Z. God bless.

The G2 is definitely a great way to go. Tough, versatile, cost-effective. I think in the other thread on this mod, it was christened the "G3". I think the CPFG3 would be a good designation! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The CPFG3 Lives!

Well, I got my P90 lamp in the mail today. I attached the plastic body extension to the G2 barrel and made a simple battery spacer out of a wooden dowel with a piece of copper wire stuck through a hole in the center. I wrapped the dowel with electrical tape for a perfect fit in the tube. 3 123's, install the lamp, and YOWCH I can almost see. Spots everywhere! It's a GREAT light! (Sometime, when I get to borrow a friends digital camera, I'll get some pics up on my website.

Sadly, they backordered my G2Z bezel without telling me, so I'll hafta keep waitin' for that. All in all, a great mod for added flexibility if you REALLY need to light things up!
