I am making my first aleph light engines and would like at least 1 of them to host a Seoul P4. Does the Seoul need to be shimmed? I am looking for a beam quality similar to Lux III w/ McR's but better runtime.

Thanks for any help,
Chris

It depends on the reflector...if the reflector will come down a bit more-no. Some large reflectors will tolerate the slight difference with no trouble. You almost have to try to find out!
I see DX has the Edison Opto too now. I think this Led may have the same height as the Luxeon does- no shim, and may not have the positive base that the SSC P4 does either. Someone who knows for sure will have to say....I have several on order, but will be 2 weeks till I know for sure.

The "McR" Seoul reflectors are about .03" shorter in length than the regular McR reflectors the Aleph heads are designed for. That's cause the Seoul has to be raised that distance into the reflector to focus properly so the bottom .03" of the reflector is removed. If you are not using an "McR S" reflector, or aren't planning to shorten the reflector, no problem. If you need to shorten the reflector for proper focus, possible problem. If you don't shim the seoul on the LE, and the LE screws too far "up" into the head to maintain electrical contact, you can push the reflector "down" in the head by using an o-ring or washer/shim below the lens and correct the "z-axis" issue.
