Short Essay Question: What do you intend to use this light for?

Basically plan on using this as a tactical light for my shotgun. This is SOLELY for fun, so I'm not too picky for most things other than it needs to be close to 1" diameter and maybe 2"-4" in length with a nice throw to it. I'm leaning towards: TERRALUX CREE TLF-3C2AAEX, but can't find any dimensions on it. THANKS FOR ANY HELP OR INFO!!!

0) What Region/Country/State will the light be purchased in?

____I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.

1) Price Range: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____I can spend $15-30.

2) Format:

____I want a LED flashlight.

3) Length:

____2-4 inches. (Pocket carry)

4) Width:

Close to 1" as possible

5) What batteries do you want to use? Alkaline batteries are easier to find and less expensive but don't pack as much stored energy and are don't work well in cold temperatures. Lithium batteries have long shelf life (10+ years, great for stored emergency lights) and are not as affected by cold but must be kept dry and are more expensive. Rechargeable start expensive, but if used frequently pay off quickly.

____I want common Alkaline batteries. (AA, AAA, C, D)

6) How much light do you want? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).

____I want to light an entire campground or dazzle an intruder. (100+ lumens)

7) Throw vs Flood: Which do you prefer, lights that flood an area with a wide beam, or lights that "throw" with a tightly focused beam? Place an "X" on the line below.

Throw (distance)-X---------------------|----------------------Flood/close-up

8) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims (like some LED lights). but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries.

____60-240 min. (1-2 hours)

10) Operational Modes: Check all that apply.

____A simple on-off is fine for me.

11) Is it important whether the body is metal or plastic/composite?

____I don't care.

Let me get this right. You want a light that runs on AA, under $30, and throws?

Well for sure that eliminates Surefire. I'm not familar with inexpensive lights that meet your criteria.

There are other considerations to think about. How do you plan to mount the light to your shotgun?

Recoil may slowly damage the light since it is not a dedicated weaponlight. You may need to invest a little bit more for a light that can withstand the shotgun recoil.

I mean this honestly. You're talking about a $15-30 cap on a light to be used on a heavy-recoiling deadly force tool that someone's life could depend on???

After all, it's just for fun. Honestly, bumping the price range up to $60-80 will give you much more enjoyable options. Soon enough you'll have several people telling you about all the fun you're missing by sticking to the "a meal out" price range.

A weapon-mounted flashlight is a toy or expensive, not just because of the mounting hardware and dependability you need.

Maybe I should have gave a description of why I want to use it as a tactical flashlight on the shotgun... No way would this be used for defense purposes or anything my life would depend on. We (me and friends of mine with our wives) typically go to my camp which is on the lake front in the woods. For some reason the past 3-4 times we've been up there, it never fails the guys always get the urge to go walk through the woods in hopes of finding some rabbits, possums, etc to shoot and the flash light would be just be kind of cool thing to have mounted on the end of the shotguns instead of having a "spotter".

* For those that probably will shun me for doing this, we're safe about it and walk like dove hunting

Thanks for the info! :)

Again you need to do some serious bargain hunting research to find an inexpensive light mount for your model shotgun. Hunting at night doesnt sound like a great idea to me. But what ever floats your boat.

In your original post you did say that you wanted 100+ lumens to "dazzle and intruder". Regardless of the application, if you ever plan to depend on the flashlight in conjunction with the shogun for home defense then don't use a cheap *** light. Probably the best option is to look at a Surefire G2. Plain regular $32 model. Then get a malkoff drop in for a whopping 225 lumens. A bit pricey at $50 for he malkoff but you get a truly quality product. then get a simple barrel clamp to mount the flashlight. Ideally mount it to the magazine tube, if you have one.

Sorry that was just part of the cut and paste thing. :)

I have the clamp for the barrel which accepts up to a 1" light. I've read alot about the more expensive Surefire's and I like you're idea. Especially to get it now and try it out. If I don't like how it performs, then upgrade it as you suggested.

I've found the dimension of the TERRALUX TLF-3C2AAEX (3.75"x1") and sounds like a perfect fit with a suppose "220 lumens" output, but from the reviews on there may not be up to that, but definitely better than the SureFire out of the box for the same price. Any suggetsions on that or just pretty much whatever I feel like going with?

Thanks for the help and time!

I cant give any advise on the terralux. But if it is as cheap as you say it is, why not buy it? Cant you afford a mere $30 flashlight? you can never have enough flashlights. use one as a weaponlight and use the other for house/work duties.

The G2 is a very common and stable platform for many recreational shooters. when you get the malkoff, the lumen output is truly staggering. I have gotten "cheap" lights that boast a lot of light output, but when compared to my surefires, the cheap lights dont come close. Gander mountain had a light that was supposedly 125 lumens, but when compared to my 80 lumen Surefire Backup E1B, it was pale in comparison.

I already have more flashlights than I need, but can't ever have enough! LOL. I'll give it a shot and since there was a review with good lumens for the price I'll buy it. I'll post back with some pics of it installed, just in case someone else wanted to do the same. :)

Thanks for the help!

Got them in Friday and promptly mounted! Just in time, mailman came about 20min before we left for the camp.

Works perfect and unfortuantely also found out both work perfect in the pouring rain without my froggtoggs. Oh well, didn't shoot anything, but was cool to use and test. The flashlight looks greenish in the pics, but in my hands is more black with a slight greenish tint.

So your shotgun is for hunting and not home defense correct?

Nope, no home defense. The tactical light is not really for hunting so much, as just to play with. The gun itself is for duck hunting and maybe squirrel/rabbit. I like using my bolt action 410 for squirrel/rabbit, more sporting! :)
