Just curious about the types of single cell LED flashlights that might be out there. So far I'm aware of:

Arc AAA - AAA cell
ARC LS rev 1 - AA cell
CMG Infinity/Ultra - AA cell
Photon, Inova, CMG etc "keychain" style - Typically 2032 coin cell.

Are there any others? Any running on C or D cells?

Thanks!

I have the head of a CMG Infinity (blue LED) rubber banded to the top of an old heavy-duty RayOVac C cell that I found while cleaning up. At least I'll get some use out of it.

Doug Speck made custom 1C and 1D packs for the Arc LS, for someone.

3 volts is considered a battery. Why people call AAAA, AAA, AA, C, and D cells 'batteries', is beyond me. They are cells, and it takes a minimum of 2 cells in a single package to be a battery.

Nothing designed as single C or D cell that I know of.

Charles: Since the 9V cell/battery uses a set of 6 AAAA cells or a stack of "flat packs" to create the 9V, is it rightly called a cell or a battery? Afterall, it is considered a single entity by most people who have no idea that there are smaller cells inside.

I'm really curious and I'm trying to improve my nomenclature. But it isn't easy to stop calling all of them "batteries".

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I'll bet it's called a battery-with 6 cells in it-just like your car battery with it's 6 x 2 volt cells.

A single cell has a natural voltage that is determined by the chemistry of the cell. The fact that we think of a 9V battery as a single unit is irrelevent to the chemistry behind it. It is 6 1.5V cells in series to yield a 9V battery.

I think it is a lesser sin (maybe even acceptable) to call a single cell a battery. After all, a single element group is just a special case--it's still a group. m-w.com even makes a special exception to allow it in defining battery. Calling a multi-cell battery a cell doesn't make sense though.

Note that a cell is not defined by voltage, but by having a single electrochemical pair of electrodes. The voltage of the cell will depend upon the particular reaction involved.

In particular, many lithium chemistry cells are in the 3V range. If you stretch the definition of cell slightly (still two electrodes), then a beta emitter 'nuclear battery' is a single cell which operates in the thousands of volts.

For the purist, by definition a battery is a collection of cells. Common usage has blurred the distinction though. Even the manufacturers sometimes labels their cells as batteries, such as Rayovac's AA cells labeled with the term "alkaline battery".

good point i never looked @ it that way. makes sense. you never hear them calling multiple guns in the military "cells"

There is also the Rigel Systems Skylight or Mil-Skylight. They run off of a single 9v battery. The Skylight has 2 red leds and 2 white leds.
The Mil-Skyight has 2 green leds and 2 white leds.

The site www.glow-bug.com is advertising 2 new lights on it's site. One is called the ShoreLite Vx-1 and runs on a single AAA battery powering a single nichia led. The other new light they are advertising is called the ShoreLite Vx-2 and runs off of a single AA battery powering 2 nichia leds.
