My UPS just made a bunch of non-stop noise.
I check the battery and it measured 8.18v [12v, 12AH in a 650VA APC unit]

Is there a way to rescue the battery for a few more months ?

My battery went into service 5/1/2007 died ? 6/7/2010 $36 cost / yr = $12 so far.....

If its a goner then which is a better deal at (estimated) $/yr cost. ?

One with mfg code 2008 for $25

Or one made early 2010 for $37

I would not try to use that battery because if you do, the UPS will not be able to reliably support the load during a power outage.

You could try to charge it, but there is a good chance there has been permanent loss of capacity especially considering the age of the battery. It is recommended that UPS batteries are replaced after 3-5 years.

You should buy the brand new replacement for $37 and avoid the hassle of a SLA battery that has sat in storage for too long and probably sulfated.

Saying that, what led to the failure - was there a power outage that made the UPS run on batteries? Did the UPS run a self test and then complain?

I don't recall that there was an outage. It just started fussing and wife set switch to "off" shut it up. Must have been some kind of test that APC runs to check up on the battery from time to time.

That battery is dead. You may get it back to 12v but it will never hold a charge. For a ups, thats no good.

Go for the newer dated batteries -definitely.
