I store my Lithium batteries (CR123, CR2, L91, L92) in a metal ammo can, all in their original bubble/carton packaging.

Recently, when I open the can, I notice a smell coming from the can I can characterize as the smell of a Sharpie Pen's ink.

Is this normal?

I checked all the batteries inside the ammo can and all seems ok, visually. I cannot measure voiltages as the batteries are all in their original packaging still.

Any thoughts, suggestions, alarming words of wisdom?

You know you're a flashaholic when...

You sniff lithium batteries like it's a drug.

I did not sniff it intentionally.

I opened the can and out came the smell. It's quite strong.

I don't even have to stick my nose to it. I am about 2 feet away and I can smell it.

Words of Wisdom - yes! For some reason, storing batteries in a metal/conducting can, just doesn't seem like a good thing to do, even if they are further kept in insulating containers within the can. Especially, Lithium batteries which would be susceptible to violent ventings if shorted. We all make mistakes and who knows, you could be distracted someday and accidentally cause a short.
