So... who really cares about lumens anyways?

Does anyone else out there have a light they will never upgrade/replace just because of the sentimental value it contains? My dad has a mini-mag from the early 80's, right after Mag opened, and refuses to replace it with anything because it has been through so much. That was mine (well technically my dad's but still...), now let me hear your stories :)

My green Led CMG Infinity.

Still no need after all these years.

I have a light that was my grandfathers, one of those all metal Rayo sportsman's, and I have upgraded it but nothing so far as a permanant mod. I like being able to revert it to stock if I want to. It's got 2 CR123's in a homemade holder and an appropriate PR bulb so a tiny upgrade but it really shows!

I have an old 2D Ash Flash incan that is about 37 years old.

My grandmother gave it to me when I was a kid. The only thing I have done to it was put a new bulb in it since the one that came in it burned out.

I have a shelf full of old lights that go back as far as 30 or more years, mostly from garage sales and such.

More to the point though would be my first 2AAA mini mag, spent a lot of money to buy that, around $20, well a lot back then for me anyway. It does have an LED upgrade in it right now, but easy to revert back. It would never be sold or permanently changed, since it's basicly just a shelf queen now it will likely never be lost either.

Some day I'll get a picture of that shelf up in one of the post your lights threads.

I have a couple of old lights from my father that I want to upgrade with screw type base led upgrades to see how the beams work with the reflectors, especially the ones with convex lenses. I am a little too protective of these lights to use for general purposes but I could see using them in a ceremonial sentimental fashion with an upgrade but I would promptly return the original bulb to it's proper resting place.:candle:

I love the feeling of an old 8F 6volt battery. It just screams old school awesomeness. The hefty weight you know will deliver long run time and low out put:ohgeez:.

Normally all my other old lights are bought to be modified. Though I have to say it absolutely kills me when ever I have to cut one of the wires in the old lights:(. I can reveres almost all of my changes I make, but when I cut the stock wires in a 40 year old Bigbeam is gives me shivers to think the person who put them in there originally by hand could have passed on my now:mecry:, and I'm undoing something that has withstood the test of time "and could probably last another hounded years" with the simple squeezing motion of my hands:shakehead:sigh:.

I've only been into high quality lights for two and a half years now so I do not have any older lights that hold sentimental value. I do think that I'll probably never sell my McLux PD-S because it is my favourite light.

The only thing i can think of is my 2AAA Mini Mag, i got it when i was 10, I'm only 16 now so its 6 years old, i got it for my first camping trip, the only upgrade is an LED upgrade but it can easily be put back to stock. I don't ever plan on getting rid of it.

I hope to inherit all the flashlights that my dad keep in his bedside drawer. Nothing expensive, just some old old penlights, etc. which I used to play with when I was a kid. It is so full of sentimental value that I will not modify it even if it is dim.

Being a true flashaholic, I appreciate all the different flashlight technologies irregardless whether it is incan, led, hid, arc, etc.

I also appreciate the R&D effort and money invested by companies like Surefire, pelican to design and develop their own range of flashlight. If they build a SF 6P the way it is, I am sure with their expertise and experience, they know what they are doing. Hence I respect their decision and will not mod it with a 3rd party drop in. Glad to report all my flashlights, especially Surefires are stock.

I do. Once you have a lite at a certain lumen level, that's "very bright" for you, you never accept anything less.

But this, I plan to keep forever, and pass it on to future generations. Theoretically, if taken care of, it should be indestructable. I call it CertainFire (Surefire clone)

this doesn't really have anything to do with the thread, but i find it sorta funny in an ironic way how etc has a CertainFire when firefly99 said how he doesn't approve of Surefire clones, lol. sorry just an observation

What I mean is I had no respect for manufacturers who clones the design of another brand.

I had passed the stage where brightness is the main factor. I had been in situation where I blind myself because my light is too bright, where a dim light would be more suitable.

I keep my flashlights (Surefire / Pelican / Inova) in original form. I play lego with original parts, eg. replacing P60 with P61.

I had no issue with modder like etc who create their own Frankenstein light and are happy with the end result. Personally, I think it is a waste to spend on a SF to use as a host for modding. Paying SF price and not enjoying the SF reliability.

Different strokes for different folks.

Hence etc would be fine calling his a "CertainFire" because he built it himself from his own parts and is not a manufacturer trying to deceive buyers into purchasing something of inferior quality.(In response to Liberty1992) I too remember the U2 Clonefire...

With that kind of price charged by SF, it is better to leave SF light in their original form.

Guess it would be much cheaper to use one of those clones "...fire" as a host for modding. Or as suggest by other poster, SuperDave, buying each component to build up the light.

Wow... really nice :D Maybe someday we will look back in our toolboxes or be dusting off an old shelf and pull out a Lux I... Amazing how the world progresses

I still have my blue AA Mini-Mag that I received as an X-mass gift in 1984. I can still remember openning it under the tree, and how hard it was to unscrew the tailcap with my fingers to put the batteries in. It was my first flashlight ever; It's not real bright.. but it's a keeper for obvious reasons ;).
