not sure if you are refering to one of the above links, but that oval shape is not caused by the lens but is due to how the (edge-emitting) laser diode works. The laser light is generated in an active layer which is wider than it is thick which causes the output to be oval/elliptical. Some interesting literature about lasers can be found here. (not sure why Britney lurks around there but it's an excellent website). The first picture shows a schematical view of the laser diode.
