I Lurk no more! lol..

I have had a significant fetish with lights for some time, specifically when Luxeon came out.. I have a surefire L4, a ultrafire 6W(which I plan on using as my trial and error device, its crappy), and just got my P1D-CE..
sold most of the others I think..

Now for the questions.. I been searching and cant come up with a solid answer on a couple things.. Is there a "doable" mod for the L4 that is worth it, maybe a cree upgrade?.

The superfire emitter is only held in by two screws to the heat sink, and seems to be fairly straight forward, when it comes to the wiring.. looking for suggestions for this light too...( working on some dis assembled pics.)

The Last is what is the Brightest Cree emitter made and how many watts??

You guys, and this forum rock.. thanks in advance for any help..

Re: Some Led questions..

a member here named milkyspit can mod you L4 with a seoul for about 180 out the front lumens compared to the 100lm it is now and for your other light you might be able to replace the star with one of these http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1445 the seoul led usually works better in a luxeon optic
the brightest cree you can get is the Q2 bin but it will be soon outdated by upcoming bins
hear is a thread on milkyspit http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=168545

o yeah welcome

Re: Some Led questions..

The L4 is a Luxeon V light. There isn't anything that can really replace a Lux V atm. I still love my L2 and wouldn't dream of changing it right now. I in no way intend to tell you what to do or speak for milky, but most of his mods are on L1, E1L and E2L lights for direct emitter swaps as far as I understand.

I assume the "6W" Superfire is burning a K2 emitter up. I'd check the current first and be sure you get some thermal compound to get good heat transfer off of the LED. But you should be able to do a direct replacement for a Seoul Semiconductor SSC P4 in that cheapo light.

I think that Cree Q5 Flux emitters are just becoming available... here.
107 - 114 Lumens @ 350mA
And I hear there are samples of R2 and R3 emitters in the wild. It's a good time to be a flashaholic.

Is the Cree emitters, a star config like this?

I am eager, but green when it comes to the modding part of lights...

The LED you posted are of a Seoul LED. The Seoul LED uses the same die, EZ1000, as the Cree LED. All White Cree XR-E emitters use about the same power except some are more efficient the others. Currently the most efficient is the Q5 LEDs. They can be driven at any wattage with the right amount of heat sinking, But I wouldn't recommend any more then 5 watts.

Try the modding forum as a starting place.

Welcome to CPF!

P.S. You might want to add a bit of thermal paste/epoxy under your Ultrafire's Seoul Star to ensure a good heat path or the LED might burn it self out.
