I'm looking for a new pack to replace my trusty Eagle A-III. Anyone tried the Spec Ops Brand THE pack? I like the looks of it, and the extra PALS webbing is an attractive feature. It is also competitively priced, about the same as the Eagle. My only concern is that the main compartment does not appear as large as the A-III's.

When time came me to replace my issued assault pack I tried out the SOB THE Pack at the PX on base out here... I've got a pretty skinny neck and the straps felt uncomfortable with no weight in the pack. Right after that I picked up my Eagle/LF RAID, and never looked back.

3-color Desert RAID

My next pack is going to be either a PPM Small Assault Pack or a Kifaru Scout . To fill the size gap between my Eagle RAID and Kifaru E&E Packs.

Also, I didn't answer over on LF.net because I feel bad recommending gear that Brad doesn't sell, but the PPM gear is pretty tough stuff. You can get them factory direct or from OPTactical.com .

Looks like everyone is having problems with the straight shoulder straps.

Those PPM packs look impressive. How does the size of the PPM SAP compare to the A-III?

Thanks,
Brian

I looked at the THE pack, but decided against it since it was a bit to small. I bought a cheap knockoff 3 day pack instead. The 2 packs that interest me right now the most are made by CamelBack. They have a bag the same size as the Eagle 3 day for the same price, and one a bit bigger (and about $20 more). They both have the MOLLE webbing to add more pouches. A few people bought these to take to the desert with us, and so far haven't had any problems.

I can't find any hard number on the sizes of the PPM packs. It seems they have gone through some different upgrades, or "generations", and used to be a different company named "Tactical Assault Systems." Anyways, the SAP is shorter than the A-III, but about the same width and depth. The PPM MAP (Medium Assault Pack) is taller and probably closer to the size of the main compartment on the A-III.

I also recommend the Eagle/LF RAID pack or the Eagle A-III pack. They are bulit very solid and their considerable more comfortable plus you can put more pouches, camelbak, and the back plate for more comfortable with additions of side large pouches. It's top notch. Haven't tried the PPM but have tried the THE pack.

I'm really craving that RAID now. Its a little more than I intended to spend, but I do have some PALS pouches already and I also have the waist belt and internal frame from my A-III pack that could be used.

Thanks for the input,
Brian

I would check out the Camelbak BFM. It looks just like the Eagle Recon Hyrdro. Go over to AR15 forums in the Survival forums and there is a bunch of write-ups on it (as well as others). Hope that helps...

Have you seen the BFM and RAID?

The BFM has 5x external pouches, the RAID has none.
The BFM has 4x little patches of PALS, the RAID is fully covered.
The BFM has 4x external compression straps, the RAID has 6x.
The BFM has side carry handles, the RAID has side sleeve pockets.
The BFM is slick on the bottom, the RAID has PALS and 2" webbing on the bottom.
And the list of differences goes on...

BTW, you guys have an awesome deal going for the BM Skirmish! Great price and a free light, it's tempting!

Also take a look at the Assault pack (don't remember the exact name) by Tactical Tailor. It is covered in MOLLE (the same as PALS I'm certain. Rows of 1 inch webbing, spaced one inch apart, and sewn down about every 2 inches?) I think it's about the same size as the typical 3 day pack.

Double,

You are ABSOLUTELY right. What I really meant was that it is similar to the Eagle Recon Hydro...

Flavio

PS the BM Skirmish has your name all over it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What about the CB Motherlode? It looks similar to a THE pack/3-Day pack with PALS. Good price, plus comes with the hydration bladder.

It's the one I recommended in my first post. I forgot the name though. They also have a slightly larger one called the BFM that has a couple outside pockets already sewn on, and a larger main compartment. I like the Motherlode. It's the same size as the 3 day packs, is very well built, and the water bladder is IMNHO the best on the market. It has enough MOLLE/PALS/SHRIKE webbing to attach just about anything you'd need, but not so much that it's just there for looks.
