The Titanium Mako AAA is a Survival / Back-up / Emergency / EDC / Camping flashlight.

Made in a very limited edition run, each individually handmade by Enrique, also know as Endeavour here at CPF.

The design objectives were to create a small, unobtrusive torch that ran for a very long time on a common AAA cell, in a durable package, with some compelling features at an affordable price point.

The Mako has two brightness stages: 20 hours runtime on high mode and 60 hours on low mode.

Construction is super-tough non-corroding 6AL4V Titanium.

Battery contacts in the head are solid gold-plated to decrease the possibility of corrosion.

For the project a new LED which had not yet found its use into flashlights was used. A 5mm LED from Cree, which had the best color of any of the 5mm LEDs. Designed with a true current regulator to provide 6mA and 20mA to the LED on low and high mode, respectively, provides a reasonable amount of output and keeps everything within the efficient design limits.

Compared to other lights in this category, Mako’s tints are slightly cool to neutral white with decent color uniformity. The beam is not perfect, as is the nature of 5mm LEDs, but at a distance of 10 feet or so, it’s nice. The beam has a dim, incidental corona due to the LED not being 100% efficient in emitting its light within the 15 degrees it’s rated at. The presence of the main spot within the beam is a bit ringy. This could have been countered by sacrificing water resistance and blocking off all the sides of the LED except for the very tip. That was unacceptable. Water resistance was not sacrificed. The end result is that these LEDs are the best in their class, providing a nice neutral beam tint in tough water resistant package.

Brightness levels: the Mako can be viewed as having two distinct levels, but you should think of them more as full power, and power save mode. High mode is providing a fair amount of light more than low mode, with roughly a 4:1 high-to-low ratio.

What batteries you should feed your Mako? Any standard AAA cell, as well as any properly manufactured rechargeable cell that charges to around 1.5V will work fine. For rechargeables, recommend cells are the Sanyo Eneloop, which have a very low self discharge rate. NiMH batteries are well suited to low current, long shelf life applications like the Mako. For disposable batteries, lithium primaries are the best choice. Lithium primaries have less likelihood of leaking than alkaline batteries, and provide a slight boost in runtime. If you choose to run your Mako on an alkaline battery, be sure to check on the light periodically to make sure that the cell is still intact and replace it if it goes past the expiration date on the label.

The Mako was delivered in December 2008.

Mako is pronounced “Mey-Co”.

============

This is the light that I chose to EDC. Of course, there are more powerful lights with smoother beams out there if all you want is a bright and pretty beam, but no other flashlight comes close to the Mako for use in harsh environments and hard times.

I was able to buy two, thinking that the second one would become a back-up if i even needed it. Fact is, I don't expect the one I'm now carrying to ever fail me, so this one is up for sale.

Any questions, write me at coyote (at) otcwb.com

SOLD New in package. $115 plus shipping/insurance. Payment via no-fee paypal or postal money order preferred.

Thanks for looking!
