Was at Wally World this morning, & I came across a few packages of CR223 batteries dirt cheap.

Assuming they are just CR123 doubled up in that black housing,....if you split/seperate them, are they able to be used individually?

If so, how, or what is the best method to break through the black plastic housing withOUT damaging the battery?

Yes, they are two CR123..
Best way (well the way i do it) is to get a small - screwdriver and hammer to lever the "top" off. I then wrap them individually.

Careful not to short them while splitting it with a metal tool.

The individual cells are naked. You will need to wrap it with tape.

Also, wear safety googles and careful not to slip and cut your fingers. The plastic case can be tough and slippery to split.

They are Energizers that you can see are already wrapped in original Energizer Lithium wrapping. Thanks.

Well it is smarter than my way of using strong knife and lot of force to cut them apart. From my experience atleast Duracell can take alot of damage and still work properly.

Frankly its not worth the effort. Buy some Battery Station cells online instead.

You do need to put in some effort. I get achy finger joints after doing it from over exertion trying to pry the plastic case open.

Actually, I stand corrected. They are not wrapped. How do I wrap them in order to protect them?

Hey, they are $1.00 each. If you use an Energizer coupon that usually comes in the Sunday newspapers, they are free! So, why not, you know?

At Walm-Mart, in the clearance area of batteries, computer stuff. Its funny, b/c they have the Energizer for $1, but the Duracell for $10.95!!!! Go figure.

Hey dude, there are thousands of Walmarts. Where/which Walmart?

Why do you need to wrap them anyway?

Because the cells are naked. Meaning, the metallic sides of the battery are all exposed. The metallic side is part of the negative terminal of the battery. If you put this in a metal flashlight, the sides of the battery will contact the sides of the flashlight and may bypass the flashlight switch and may cause a short.

awww...........ok. So after I take it out of the casing, just wrap the sides of the battery with a simple layer of electrical tape then? That's it?

I use scotch tape. Scotch tape is thinner.

If you use electrical tape (thicker), your battery becomes thicker and may get stuck inside your narrower flashlight tube.

I live in Houston. I have checked 3 other Wal-Marts, but the one by where I live was the only one who had them for $1. I think it was b/c it was an old packaging? They are the cardboard type packaging, while the other stores had them in that tough plastic case/wrap.

Just MHO, this is an outdoor activity at best.

While I appreciate the goal of saving money, this is in the penny saved, pound foolish arena.

There are enough battery accidents out there. Also, when you have a short and vent the cells, make sure you have access to a local hospital with HF exposure treatment. In Houston you should be ok, as this is used in oil refineries as well.

Please consider not doing it.
