For those that have played around with it, how does the sst-40 compare to other leds on the market? Is it an upgrade over the xml2? Better output? Tint?

There are people here that know WAY more about it than me, but personally, I find it similar to something like an XHP35 HI, but with higher max output. It's definitely an improvement over the XM-L2. Tint is okay, but nothing special.

I haven't had a chance to play around with one, but djozz (who is a member here, but more active elsewhere) has done an output test on it.

Luminus rates it at 6A maximum, while I think the XM-L2 is rated for 3A. Unsurprisingly, the two test pretty closely at low to medium currents, but the SST-20 outperforms the XM-L2 at high currents, and has a relatively low forward voltage, so it can achieve a lot of output on a FET driver.

The beamshots I've seen seem to have minimal tint shift. It's not available warmer than 4500K (and I don't think I've seen it offered for sale less than 5000K), nor in high CRI as far as I know.

Haven't played with any yet (still doing research), but as for what I have read on reviews....SST-40 tends to have a pencil beam......Cree XKP50.2 has a hotspot like the sst-40, but a much wider spill. The xhp50.2 has a better tint than the sst-40.

And be careful when de-doming/slicing the SST40, the bond wires come up a bit into the gell dome and it`s easy to cut them if you slice too low to the chip

By "pencil beam", I think you mean the 20. The 40 has a fairly large die size.

it is, and it doesn`t throw as well either.

Well, doesn't a smaller die thus create a pencil like (= narrow) beam?
XHP50.2 bigger die = wider beam
SST-40 smaller die = narrow beam

& if so, doesn't that make it a better thrower?

it will make for a narrower beam sure, I don`t know about a "Pencil" beam though, that sort of thing is more the reserve of lights like a LEP. and yes the narrower the beam to further it will throw for a given photon count. like if you had say 10gr of playdough and you roll it out, if it`s too thick it won`t be very long and the thinner you roll it the longer it`ll get, but it`s still the same 10 grams.
