Read on another thread recently, where someone suggested the 3 LED'S ON THE A2 made a good walking light.
True or false ? Your opinions would be appreciated.

John

I think it's ok as a walking light. Though I'd say it'd be a little on the dim side. Also the LEDs don't have much throw, but I guess that's why the incandescent is there!

JohnF, if you're talking about can I see where I am stepping and the area directly around me with the leds, then the answer is yes. If you want to see medium+ range, you'll need to turn on the A2's incan.

Phaserburn,When you say "the area directly around you", what sort of distance are you talking about.
You'll have to humour me guys , I'm new to this, having said that , been a member a few weeks and it's already cost me a bloody fortune. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif

I think phaserburn is talking about 2-4 feet. I've been using the A2 at work. Trust me, even with just the LEDs you're not gonna fall into a hole unless you're blind!

the LEDs are definitely only of use for closeup work. as a walking light you would need absolute darkness for the LEDs to be adequate, any light polution washes out their beam.

nice (regulated) incan beam though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

The LED's on my A2 allow me to see comfortably for a distance of ten to fifteen feet at night. They're slightly less bright than the three LED's on my Streamlight TT L2, but only slightly. Either of these would make a good walking light, IMHO.

I walked my dog last night using a Streamlight 3C-XP Xenon/LED. The LEDs were completely enough light when no other light was around. I feel about the same about several 3 LED lights.

A2 is way above my pay scale! I find a TT2L modded with a kroll to be a nice EDC light.

The useable amount of lights from the leds will be in direct porportion to the surrounding darkness. If it is bright enough to not need it then how dim it is won't matter. If it is dark enough to gain some use it will be exponitiall related to the lack of ambient light. If I only have one light on me it is going to be the A2.

JohnF, led range is around 10 feet; ambient light will diminish that. For me, walking at night has always required a light with throw and good flood.
