So the other day I was playing around with my accessories and came up with this simple mod that works on Surefire P60 hosts (and maybe other brands but I only have SF hosts):
*NOTE: NOT FOR INCANDESCENT MODULES*

Take an F04 (or similar Filter)

Then pop out the lens

Place the lens on top of P60L, M60, or other LED module

Then screw on the bezel. The filter leaves a small gap, thats the only compromise.

Bezel shot with P60L:

Bezel shot with Malkoff M60

(The M60 leaves a bigger gap)

So now you get the flood of a FM34, with the stock form.

(works with red filters too )

So whatcha think?

Looks good, though I don't care for the gap. Not sure about heat, but might also be able to pick up some theater gels cheap, they are paper thin and should tolerate some heat.

I've gotten sample books of them free from 2 companies and they are amazing. Such a variety of diffusion strength out there.

The Fo4 lens on top of an LED is a quick neat mod though, good thinking. I would limit the exposure time of an incan however!

Thanks for the fast replies.
65535: theater gels sound great. Thinner with the same effect. Cool.

Sgt. LED: I never run my incans long anyway, so this mod works for me. Good point about the heat; I never thought about that myself.

I advise against putting the BeamDiffuser on the inside of the bezel when running incandescent lamp assemblies due to the heat build-up and the increased likelihood of damaging the diffuser.

That said, the Classic F21 is the BeamShaper instead of the Lexan window... Pretty rare part though

Thanks Al. Ill edit my post.

You can get enough light diffusing film from flashlightlens.com to do dozens of lights, or a couple of UCL lenses with LDF installed for less than a F04.
This is one of my favorite mods.
Some companies that make diffusing film of various grades for camera flashes offer sample packs that are free, too.

I bought a couple of lenses with LDF from flashlightlens.com and didn't get anywhere near the diffusion of an F04. I emailed flashlightlens.com and they were very helpful and suggested a couple of layers of ldf might do the job. Two layers gets you close to the F04 performance. Unfortunately, this isn't as convenient to remove as an F04. I really wish Surefire would build an F04 style diffuser for the 6P/9P/C/Z bezel. If you really want pure flood, nothing I've tried beats Malkoff's M60 flood modules.

How much did output suffer with two layers of LDF? I actually like the LDF better in some ways, since it's still a flood, but with a brighter center, that projects the beam further. Lets my modded E2L on high keep up with the M60WLF(the F models are favorites of mine, too) even though the E2L has less current draw/longer runtime.

I want kind of the opposite of what you do.
Probably not a popular idea, but I'd like a baby version of the FM34 for the E series, maybe with interchangeable filters. The stock ones with TIR optics really need a diffuser for close work, but the F04 is a pain to keep track of when you're taking it on and off the light.
I switch back and forth from flood to throw a lot at work, and since the first night I used it, have thought the FM34 was the best flashlight accessory I ever bought.

Have you considered SureFire's FM54 Beam Diffuser for 1" (E-Series) bezels?
This is exactly what you're asking for (except the interchangeable filters)...

Al, I've never heard of that, but I'm off to look! Thanks:thumbsup:

Holy crap. You didn't mention they're around $90. Maybe the local rep can help me out...

The FM5x Series were introduced for the ScoutLights because of the need to transition from normal to filtered output like with SureFire's traditional models.

I found an actual pic, and it looks too squared off and long top to bottom to be comfortable for pocket carry. Great on a weaponlight for indoor use, no doubt, but I think I'll keep the F04 while counting my blessings, and my $90!
I'd love to have that kind of functionality for my E2DL, though.
At least I got to learn something new:)

Yeah, but they don't have a high mode for flood.
I don't know that I'd carry this around at work or anything, but the Olight diffuser does have a molded in ring for attaching it to something.

I knew one day I'd find a use for one of those oversized o-rings that Lighthound says are for Surefire C bezels...

Hello Sgt LED,
This is a question I have for you from a previous thread regarding your modification of the Rayavac 300 Lumen LED Lantern.

How did you remove the original LEDs? They are secured pretty tightly.

Please send him a private message instead of (accidently in your case) going off topic. Thanks.
