I have this old light (incandescent bulb), wondering if I could replace the head with, say, a Haiku head and have it work. Would be easier for cashflow if I could buy a head, use it for a few months, then buy the battery pack and switch at a later date.

Is this possible? Is this practical? Advice greatfully received!

The choice of compatible heads is HUGE, just do a small search around CPF today... good start is a thread "Surefire E-series Addicts Unite!" where you will find numerous awesome setups and LEGOs that members made in the past... lot of aftermarket options...

To answer your question directly, Haiku head will work as long as it's proper voltage (depending on the battery) and as long as battery is not being crushed when head is tightened...

Good question! Although my lights have been designed around the E-series architecture now for a number of years, I don't know when the last time I tried one of my heads on the original E series paks with the original LOTC. Most of what I have around of SF e-series wither has clickie tail caps or McE2S tail caps. I did find a stock black E1e and just put a Haiku head on it. I found I could shift to the level I wanted with the momentary activation and then just screw down the tail cap for a constant on of that level. Using the twisty activation for level change was also possible but a bit challenging on that particular light. Probably help if I gave the tail cap a better lube job.

Me, being a "lego" person, always have all kind of setups in head (and on the shelf) so missed the strict McGoodies part... again, apologies... :)

Yes ... probably even a bit more easily, since the E1B "host" has a clicky switch :)

As long as the battery voltages are kept in the proper ranges, there are lots of combinations possible.

Once you get the McClicky Pak, too, you'll have even more options .... I often use that Pak to host the E1B, when I want a compact beam-thrower :twothumbs

This is another good question. I know it's typical that buying parts or components of an item will usually end up costing way more than if one were to purchase the item in its entirety. That is not the case here. I have priced the heads, battery paks separately and when I build a light for someone I just take the individual prices for the components and add them up to get the total. I could add a premium to these costs for a single component purchase but it wouldn't be justified beyond my ability to do so. There is no added cost to me in selling something less than a complete light because these are not in inventory or prebuilt as complete lights. I don't order the components as sets where selling just a component would render some orphan components.

The sapphire is a different story as head and paks are ordered and inventoried as sets.

If you buy a head and later a battery pak you will pay the same as you would had you purchased a complete light consisting of the head and pak. The only added expense would be the additional postage.

I really want to get a TC like this, since I have some older E series, and a few Haiku heads.

This would be great for a UV Haiku head as to not get confused with regular complete Haikus, just for the safety aspect alone.

For some reason, I love the mixed look of the parts.

Now, I will still take my regular Haiku's to social events so the people who think they have everything gasp: "OMG where did you get that," and I ping their phone so i can tell them about them and provide Don's info. Later. Always like to promote Don and people I like. Can't hurt.

However, this seems fun for a change to have a mix of parts that all work swimmingly together, yet have such differences in appearance, but not quality.

Somehow, I am going to need to win a Pulitzer Prize or something to support all of this.
