I have a Surefire G2 in yellow that I am looking at possibly upgrading to LED as I primarily use it for hunting and would like longer battery life.

What are my best options for a plug and play upgrade?

Lots of options.

A Malkoff M60LL will give LOTS of runtime (about 8 hours - http://www.malkoffdevices.com/shop/m60ll-lowest-output-to-fit-surefire-p-9.html) at ~bulb 80 lumens. Looks like they are sold out now.

Or you can go to nailbender in the custom B/S/T (see below)
http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=239719
And tell him what you want - he recently made one for me where I didn't want a real distinct spot - just lots of light. He can do multi level or not.

For my G2s I end up putting a netkidz clicky in the tail - but I don't know if he is selling them anymore.

Like the others, I can't say enough about Gene Malkoff's dropins: they're sturdy, offer an idiot-proof "one-step-drop-in" upgrade path, and provide a phenomenal beam pattern.

If you're using the flashlight to hunt outdoors, you may want to consider one of the "warm" versions; this type of LED provides better color rendition outdoors. And for increased runtime, you should consider getting the M60WL ("w" indicates warm, and "l" indicates low), which gives you 100 lumens for 4 1/2 hours. It's a whole lot of runtime from 2 CR123s! Of course, if you don't care about the tint, you can also buy an M60LL, which runs for an insane 8 hours on two 123s.

Other options include CPF member Nailbender's dropins, BugOutGear's drop-ins, or the drop-in modules from Dereelight.

Hope this helps!

Deal Extreme has a Cree 11836 that I use in my hunting G2 lights. Very bright and better run time than the xenon bulbs with 3v batteries.

i have the aluminum head and i have the malkoff m60 which runs beautifully, i also removed the front lens and bezel so i could retrofit it with the solarforce LT-1 lantern assembly thingy...removed sounds a bit surgical, i bashed it out and it took a heck of a long time, but needless to say the M60 has its own optic so the lens is optional and the lantern ability makes it a very versatile "bang around" light,

ie: tracking the deer i want a spotlight, but when i find it i don't want to hold a flashlight in my mouth while trying to gut it, so i affix the lantern head (this is just a scenario as i have never had to track a deer  drop em where they stand)

As you are looking to change this to LED, I'll move it to the LED Flashlights forum.

As other members have said, you'll need to be careful with heat output if you will be using the stock Nitrolon head.

I second that. I got the 11836 too and it is great. I run it in my 6P. You can also get the 17593 from DX here is the link http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.17593.

I got one and it works flawlessly. You can go from llike 5 lumens up to 200 and choose any desired level you wish without anoying sos and strobe. It is very easy to operate with the G2. I also put the FM35 red filter on my G2 to make it a very versatile light. I compared it to my 11836 and it is just about the same brightness on high. On low it is lower than my 2AA mini mag multi mode on low which is very useful.

Unless DX changed the 11836 again for the better, I would avoid that drop-in. See this thread, starting at Post #7. If you do get that drop-in, I would swap out the driver for a 3xAMC7135 driver like this one. It'll drive the Cree R2 LED at almost exactly 1A using 1x17670 in a G2. If heat is a concern, you could get a 2xAMC7135 driver instead and run the LED at 700mA drive current (either de-solder one chip from the DX driver linked above or get this one).

It's too bad they only sell those 700 mA circuits in 20 packs.

I would like some of those to make lower output drop-ins for something like the G2 that I don't have (yet :D)

KD seems to offer a 5-pack. See ProductId=1608. If you want a wider operating voltage range, a good replacement driver is KD ProductID=1640.
