Surefire Two Stage Tailcap questions.

Currently I'm running a malkoff M61 219 in a LX2 body. It retains the high/low capability and I really like this setup. I had some questions about the tailcap. How is the reliability/durability is the tailcap? I know my surefire 6P twistys are bomb proof, does the two stage retain that durability? Also I was wondering if I can run a pair of RCR123's in the tube without frying the resistor?

In my experience yes.

I have used the LX2 as a work light for about 3 years , without any issues at all , including the tailcap.
It's by far the most reliable and durable flashlight I have ever owned.

Surefire's two-stage LOTCs share the same construction as single-stage LOTC. The difference is that two-stage has a resistor installed that will make the contact between the batteries and the flashlight, but at reduced current, when pressed halfway, while pressing it fully will bypass the resistor and allow the full current to flow. The single-stage doesn't have a resistor, and allows full current to flow regardless the position of the switch.

Two-stage is as durable and reliable as single-stage. Also, if the resistor in the two-stage burns out for any reason, it will still function as a single-stage.

I haven't had the chance yet to really test the durability of the LX2's two stage tail cap. BUT imo that the tail cap is one of the best inventions since apple pie, or boiled chicken breasts!

VME head, which is made for E-series.

the threads and size of E-series tailcaps, and surefires 2-stage tailcaps are different. so thats not interchangeable .
but the bezel threads of E-series and L-series, as well as the aviator series are the same. so it can work, just be mindful of the voltage going into the head.
L1 battery tube has its drive circuit in it so it obstructs some heads from threading all the way down. so the L1s are not really compatible without some modding. but the LX2 bodies are empty with the drive circuits moved into the bezel.

This is how I'm doing it. I'm surprised more don't use the same setup. My LX2 head was modified by MilkySplit and is sitting on a bored E2E. It took me a little while to figure out what to do with the LX2 body but after I added a VME head there is no going back now. It's my second favorite setup, next to my Milky Lego E2E.

Nothing wrong with a stock LX2 or any other Surefire. Some of us like the change things up every so often, hence a market for guys that do mods and P60 dropins.
