And if yes, what would it have to do? It doesn't have to be one currently in production, you can answer "I'd pay that much if they made one that did xxxxx". And you can be fairly loose about the definition of "flashlight" (i.e. a HID spotlight powered by a separate battery belt is fine) as long as it's just a light, it doesn't also wash the car or anything like that.

I know that a few CPFer's have Maxabeams ($1700 a pop) so at least for them, the answer to this question is definitely "yes". Quite a few more have X990's or Kumkang's which I think are in the $500-700 range.

But this question isn't about whether any flashlights are "worth" $1000 to the right user; it's what kind of flashlight (if any) would YOU, personally, pay $1000 for? A Maxabeam? A gold plated Surefire L4 with beautiful engraved artwork and mother of pearl accent rings around the head and tail joints? The Kel-Lite that was once owned by Elvis? A whiz-bang computerized LED light built to your personal specifications by Peter Gransee? Anything you can think of is fair game.

Also, I should be clear, I'm talking about a normal market transaction (you do suitable shopping and make a purchase decision), not a gunpoint purchase during a blackout or anything like that.
 
I'd fork out $1000 for a surefire HID. Id only pay that much for an incan or LED light if it were truely exceptional.
 
If the question is, would I pay $1000 for a flashlight, then the answer is probably not. I couldn't see spending that much if lights in the $100 - $200 range would do the same thing. If your question is could a flashlight be worth $1000, then the answer is yes. Depending on the technology and materials used, it could be well worth it.
 
The question is not "could a flashlight be worth $1000 in general", but "what kind of flashlight would be worth $1000 to YOU". Hope that helps.

I would pay (if I had the money /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/broke.gif) $1,000 for a rechargeable Surefire HID monster. It would need to be very light weight. It would need to have a decorative design on it, like McGizmo's Ti McLux has, or be an exteremely durable HA finish that can not be scratched.

Well, while I am a light nut... I dont think I would ever spend $1,000 on a light.

Well, maybe if we are talking about a StarWars light.
Something the size of my Arc LS, that puts out 8 to 10 Million candle power. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think I would rather spend $1,000 on a bunch of different lights. Which I will probably end up doing over time, if I stay on here.
 
I'd pay $1000 for a M6 sized flashlight that had a varible brightness output from 10 lumens to 500 lumens AND a smooth beam varible from tight spot to wide flood AND the beam color/wavelength that was continuously adjustable from pure IR to pure UV as well as white AND it had a lifetime self contained power source that need not be recharged or replaced AND it wouldn't ever heat up even when the light was switched to pure IR mode! Of course it would also have a digital in port allowing it to be used as a communications device.

Yes. Yes I would. And one day I will, unless I get lucky. Let`s just say I`m a little obsessed by the mighty Maxabeam. I know it has its shortfalls - it`s big and heavy, doesn`t run all that long per charge, the beam is a bit maglite-y, but ever since I first saw one I`ve wanted one. Just something about it that I find fascinating.

Of course I`d love it if I didn`t have to pay over a grand for one, but it`s not easy to find them for less, especially after you throw in accessories like the partial diffusion filter that makes the wide-beam setting nice and smooooth, while still retaining its immense capability for long throw.

I would pay $1000 for an E2E size light with a single L.E.D that outputs 500+ lumens and it runs on fuel cells that lasts 72 hours straight use.
 
The light I would be willing to buy for $1000.00 won't be technically feasible for at least 10 years (barring a revolutionary discovery). Of course by then $1,000 will be worth a lot less, perhaps as little as $500 in today's currency. At that point the question becomes "would I be willing to pay $500.00 for a flashlight"?

OK, interesting question!

My first reaction, after a LONG PAUSE (I did HAVE to think about it!) was NO, that is just too much.

Then my second reaction was, "Well, maybe if I used a light for many hours each day, in my profession, Maybe yes, if there was nothing comparable that performed close to this fictional 1000 light".

Then my THIRD reaction was, Well, never say never! Maybe I would! BUT it would have to be almost "science fiction hype" in features.

Size - E2e or similar
Run time - 3 Weeks straight at brightest output with no dimming (6 Weeks straight at half brightness, 12 weeks straight at quarter brightness etc).
Battery pack - Rechargable, with a 10 year storage life, with less than 5% loss of power, and a 2 hour recharge time and solar or wind up recharge options if needed.
Brightness and Beam size - Adjustable, from a FLOOD of light, similar to an array of 500 watt flood lights, to a large spot, that could throw a 50 foot round "Texas Summer Sun Bright" spot at 1 mile, to the output of a 1 LED nichia keychain light, to anything inbetween.

And the light has to be pure white, not yellow, not blue and not greenish.

Oh yea, and it has to come in either Silver, or Black or Yellow!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Would I pay $1000? No way! I don't even have $1000, but If I did, it would have to be the end all, be all of all flashlights!
 
If I was to pay $1000 for a flashlight I would have to agree mostly with BuddTX except for one thing, it would have to have batteries that never run out of charge.
 
A $1000.00 FLASHLIGHT!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING? I would be afraid to take that sucker out the house. I might lose it. The price of the Surefires makes me cringe. They make Streamlights for guys like me. I would rather have 10 good hundred dollar lights than just 1, one thousand dollar one. Lose a $1000.00 light. Have you ever seen a grown man cry?

It doesn't seem likely that I would ever have the means to AFFORD! a thousand dollar light.

HOWEVER, if the stars ever align correctly, my ship doesn't hit a rock, I win a BIG lotto etc....

Something about the size of a G2, SL 2L TT, PM6 etc.

With the output of at least a SNII, able to be dimmed down to ARC AAA output or anywhere in between....

With a runtime of at least 24 hours full bright, to a week or more dim....

Hell, give Mr. Bulk a week or two and my dream light will probably be available and less than a grand!

also, if i could design a flashlight, and have it custom made with my choice of materials, i would pay $1000 (assuming i ever get that much /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif )
