Switching Switches?

I have one flashlight I really like but the switch is a little recessed to allow candle standing and it is too firm to comfortably click on.

How do I know if a replacement switch of a different brand will actually work in my flashlight? It requires a forward clicky to change modes and I noticed the spring looks longer than most flashlights? Is there any risk in just trying all different switches other than wasting money? I don't want to do anything that would permanantly damage the flashlight and I have no idea if forward clicky's are more or less generic or if they only work with the light they are designed for.

Thanks for your help. I must warn you I am electronically challenged so any replies have t be very detailed to help me.

Is this question too stupid to answer or is the answer "no"?

I'm no experienced genius when it comes to modifying torches but all the torches I have contain simple tailcap switches that do nothng but make and break contact. Some make contact before they latch, others have to latch before they'll make contact. Provided one sticks to standard on/off type switches as described above I cannot see any way that one could cause damage to the circuitry. I guess one would have to keep the size in mind. Obviously there's the diameter issue but also there's thickness to ensure that the replacement switch will actually fit under the retaining ring and not be too thick thus causing it either not to fit or to crush the battery.
