Tactical flashlight for a cop

Candle Power Forums

Help Support Candle Power:

Thanks for the suggestions! Pelican M6 and Surefire G2Z seem both very interesting, as well as the Night fighter. Maybe I have to wait until it is released before I buy anything...

Anoter thing: The light on Scorpion is quite bright when the batteries are fresh, but the light dims very fast. How about M6 or G2Z?

The G2Z and M6 are both 123-powered incandescent lights like the Scorpion and probably similar in brightness vs. battery runtime. It may depend on the brand of batteries you use. Your best bet is probably Surefire batteries in any of these lights, since most other 123's are really intended for use in cameras rather than flashlights.

You could get a regulated LED light like an E2/KL1 or Arc LS or something to use as a duty/task light. Those get near full output from even a weak 123. Then you'd use fresh 123's in your tactical light, and as it starts to get dim, recycle the batteries into your LED light.

Finally, I think you can use a Pila lithium ion rechargeable pack and 3.7 volt lamp assembly in the G2Z. It's more stuff to buy, and runtime will be a little shorter than with 123's, but operating cost will be much lower because of the recharging.

Seppo,
I am providing a chart by Brock on the link below it shows the brightness versus runtime with the Pelican M6 being the top and the Surefire P60 (the Lamp assembly provided with the Surefire P,C and G series 2x123A lithium lights) being the one below it you will see that the PM6 has a much brighter output along with about the same but slightly longer runtime. The other lights are the Surefire E2 and The A2.

There is also an extensive review of the PM6 provided by Brightnorm here on the forums but I can't locate it at the moment so maybe someone can help?

I work as a Police officer in Sweden. I suggest you visit the Pila homepage. They got 80 lumen and 135 lumen flashlights. You can also choose to have LED in them. They are rechargeable and they have a very bright light almost the whole 50 minute runtime.

I don't think any of the Pilas have the tactical features of the G2Z, but putting the Pila 50mm Li ion battery and 3.6V lamp into the G2z would give a pretty nice rechargeable tactical light...

How do you mean, it doesn't have the tactical features?

It is blinding (80 or 135 lumen) and has a wider spread than the surefire, and it's almost half the size of the asp baton in the holster (not to big for the duty belt).

I think paulr means the adjustable CombatGrip, Lanyard, and I believe the SureFire TailCap switch is ergonomically designed for more choice in how you hold and use it.

I have all 3 of the Li-Ion lights and the Conversion kit using the Li-Ion battery and 3.7V lamp for the G2Z. It's great.40 minute run time and almost total brightness for the whole run. very bright and crisp. The lights maintain almost total brightness for the full run time.

The GL4 is an incredible light. It works great for blinding subjects and building searches.

I'm curious to know what you choose after all of this. You'll have to let us know, when you do finally get one.

I carry the GL4/M90 on my belt. it is large enough to carry under the arm in the armpit while writing tickets. The GL3 is better suited to weapons use as it much smaller. I think the GL# is better suited to a person who needs to carry a light but uses it in limited applications, like a day or evening shift. The GL4 is better suited to hard use do to the longer run time (80 minutes). Lumen wise they are about the same.

After reading all the suggestions and reviews, I decided to go for Pelican M6. Many thanks to all who helped on this one! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey Seppo, it's good that the info helped. I hope you'll post your own review after you've used the light for a while. It's always interesting to find out what a professional user thinks of a product. Most of the rest of us just get these lights and play with them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

The M6 is a good choice as a back-up flashlight. Most police in the US now carry some type of rechargable light and use the lithium powered lights as back-ups or alternate use lights.
