Hi, new here. They use a 2kw that can be run at different wattages...some Hollywood guy is converting these to 2.5kw and 4kw HMI. See one in action in the movie Taps...unless I'm mistaken.

Nothing I have seen has yet to beat carbon-arc in light output! My buddy works at Musco, and even they (engineering) have nothing that beats it. But I haven't see any operating here in the SFO bay area in many years. Used to be able to see the beam from the 60" lights in the sky from San Fran to San Jose (20 miles). Phenomenal. Made me a light geek on the spot. Some day...I'll own one for fun. Have yet to see the 15-20kw HMI conversion on the 60" in person.

By the way, a good source of parabolic mirrors is to use the glass mirrors used on traffic signals...they come in 2 sizes. Most have bee converted to LED, and some are Alzak aluminum...but diffused. If you can get the "retired" glass ones from your towns corp yard...make an enclosure, install/focus an automotive HID setup, and you've got a nice bright light.

I think there is a Carbon Arc going on near me tonight... I know its pretty far away because i am about 15 miles away from the nearest town in the direction it is coming from...

and MOTH... the stoplight idea is a good call... i may have to look into that... there are always stoplights for sale at the flea market

I remember in the 80s having a pair of search lights at a grand opening was a big deal, then they faded away. I recall seeing one of the trucks they have the lights on. It looked like a blue and green colored tractor trailler with a generator and the domes for the lights/reflectors were as big as the truck was wide. One light i could see inside the reflector and at the center was something burning. It did not see as bright at least the side spray from the light like you think it would be.

those old carbon arc search lights usr a 60 inch reflector
they are powered by a 17 kilowatt 4 cylinder generator.
