is this light worth while they have one localy for 20 bucks.is it a good light ?

cool on my way .always wanted to check out this dive shop anyways.

Mine makes a VERY VERY nice beam using a M*g Xenon 4 cell bulb and Alkalines.

I need to try NimH and a 3 cell Xenon, as in some informal attic testing last night I found KPR103 bulbs driven by 4C in three different 3D lights to KILL the output of my TEC 40.

>>>goes off to play with lights<<<

so far i like it a lot.i may try the 4 d maglight option
but i still am going to get the surge to lol. the dive shop had a few lights but none a realy wanted one that wont even run out of water it uses water to cool bulb she says.lady was nice though

Yep. The NimH and 3cell Xenon mod helped!

It isn't quite what the best of the 3D lights is, but handily whips the worst by quite a bit by my eyes.

Think I'll take it walking tomorrow night. Since it now runs free.

I like the PT40 as well. I have a home made 1W Lux lamp for mine, and I also use the Mag Zenon Star lamps. Both work well. The Lux is very white and pretty bright with good run time. The Xenon is brighter and tighter focused for better throw.

I've been working on ideas for a 3W mod. Heat sinking is the problem with these plastic, sealed dive lights. I've got a few ideas though...

Ive got 2 or 3 Tec 40's. My main problem with them is that output drops off fairly rapidly. That's one of the disadvantages of nonregulated alkaline lights.

Non-regulated lights don't drop off more rapidly than regulated lights. It's the other way around.

I love my TEC-40. I think it's beauty is in its simplicity. it works and I trust that it will work. Load it up with lithium AAs and your good to go. The funny thing is I think the beam actually looks BETTER with a cheapo krypton than with a xenon Mag bulb!

has anyone tried mounting on of these on a carbine or small rifle? just curious.

Ok, you caught me on a syntax error. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Regulated lights hold fairly constant output and then when the batts have reached their limits they drop off steeply. Lights like the Tec 40 just drop off steadily from the very beginning. The simplicity and low cost of unregulated lights are their great virtue, but I prefer that my "tools" don't morph as I use them. To use a poor analogy, if I put a 1/2" drill bit it in my toolbox, I don't want to open the box and discover that now it's a 3/8" and later a 1/4". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

Use L91 lithiums batteries and a Mag Xenon star. Works great! Very bright, and maintains a more consistant brightness. Also makes the light weigh next to nothing.

I'm playing with a 3Cell Xenon Star and NiMh. Nice and bright, but I don't know how bulb life will be (Xenons generally don't hold up to overdriving well)? So far, so good.

That is the beauty of lithiums. Such a flat discharge curve that they are essentially self regulating.

Had one, didn't like the twist bezel to turn it on. Rather stiff too. I'd rather have a Streamlight 4AA with clickie tailswitch.

The Tec 40 gives you a lot of bang for your buck. You can change the PR based bulb for more brightness or more runtime. You can even convert it to an LED light with an EverLED (which costs way more than the Tec 40 itself!!!!). It's will gladly eat any type of AA cell, and you have a choice of textured or smooth reflectors. It's waterproof and rugged. It even comes in different colors. All in all, it's a lot of fun for 20 bucks.

For even more fun try its little brother, the Tec 20.
