I made a light I call 'the blinder'. it uses 3 red high power LEDs (from DX)

driven by a AMC7135 16 mode driver, with all 3 LEDs wired in parallel. total drive current 1050ma to led string from battery around 500ma with a 50% duty cycle of flash...

powered by one li/ion cell.

no optics or reflectors, so it has a 70 deg viewing angle. Its so crazy bright I can not bear to look @ it...

very cheap & cheerfull, that can be made bigger or smaller without much effort...totally visible in the day....& absolutely blinding @ night....

Nice. I do wonder if frosted windows would be almost as bright and much less annoying... like this from nightlightning.

wonder no longer, you are spot on, I tried leaving the clear plastic cover on the lexan... much less annoying, but as this was for a customer they wanted it as annoying as poss... :D

Hey up K cool rear there I have been thinking about a rear
when the xpe reds were announced

Just a thought for you here
a piece of round acrylic bar cut down the middle and sat over the leds would make it like a solid state thingy
McTroutlite006.jpg

a bit like this experiment I did last year the tape was just to stop the bar from falling out of the U channel

with a beam shot like this only in red

and if you radius the ends it pulls the beam around for 180 degree vis

Do you mean the result is a half cylinder?
Which tool did you use to cut it this way, and still have a perfectly transparent and shiny finish as can be seen on your first picture?
Did you drill it to insert the LED domes, or does it simply sit on top of the LED domes?
if you radius the ends it pulls the beam around for 180 degree vis
What do you mean? Do you have a picture of a "radiused" end?

I've never seen this one, but know from experience that acrylic is pretty easy to polish to a nice finish after cutting with a jigsaw or similar (just do it at a low speed or it melts)

Radiused ends generally refers to rounding them out, like with a router etc.

WOW cool...

My blinder is just asking for a bit of clear half round tube!!!... guess I will now have to make the blinder Mk2..

I cut the acrylic round bar down the centre with a hacksaw

then used some abrasive paper on a flat surface to get the saw marks out did not need much effort I used 3 grades final grade some 1500 grit wet and dry used wet .

this left a milky opaque finish and now the best bit like magic .

using one of those kitchen gaz blowlamps you can run the flame over it and it polishes it real nice but it can and bubble or burn so practice on a scrap bit to get the right speed

mine was just sat touching the dome I used it with the makita battery as a work light for a while then recycled the leds on to another project .

and rounded the ends in a lathe using abrasive paper before splitting it down the middle .

K looking forward to seeing the Mk 2 Blinder

Hey Ktronik - i don't think the guy you made that for will be a return customer.

Some driver behind him will be so peed off
with being glared he'll probably be "accidentally "
run over. hehe.

Cheers
