are all threading inserts the same i have carmex now 3/8 but do other brands work with them ?

If would help us if you post the specific holder you are using :D

Pretty much all threading inserts are different/unique to the tool holder type/style, so before you buy inserts (specially from a different brand), you really need to make sure they will fit your specific tool holder.
 
The SIR means the insert uses a screw for the mounting method & if for use with right hand internal inserts.

The M just means your holder is 150mm/6" long & the 16 means it has an inscribed circle of 16mm or 3/8".

So as WillQ said you can use any 16IR insert as its an ISO standard but be sure it's IR & not ER. 16ER will still fit on the holder. With a 16ER insert mounted in your tool you could cut external threads on the side farthest from you with the spindle in reverse it you have the room.

thanks for the info is they a chart somewhere to tell what all the letters n numbers me on different inserts?
