Throw light recommendation needed

Whatever you do, make sure you can turn off a streetlight with it. It doesn't take all that much, but that's one thing that really impresses non-flashaholics, and it also works as as minimum test for throw.

PB,

An overdriven 5 cell in a 6D Mag, isn't that impressive and well,...no where close to a Thor (even with the stock bulb). Also the 5 cell bulb in a 6D mag is not even close to the magcharger. To be fair, yes, it's a great improvement, but the magcharger is just much much brighter (maglight also knows how to overdrive a bulb).

For throw, all incandescents do about the same. I can "throw" my mag into the sky the same distance as the Thor, even though the Thor is about 100 watts (well, 86) versus the Mag's 10. To get real throw you need a small source (reflectors, coatings, etc are all window dressing, and,...er,...well,...baloney). Small source = xenon short arc, aka Maxabeam.

ok, my favorite thrower is the Brinkman Maxsar-overdriven bulb, very nice. For "flashlight size", nothing beats the Maglite.

Next smaller great thrower is the Streamlight Ultrastinger. Then the Turboheads from Surefire are even smaller and also very good. Finally, for a 60 lumen Surefire copy, Strion is great, rechargeable, guilt free lumens.

Well... I tried my Strion, TL-3, and 3D Mag with a 3W Lambartian LED. None did the job. But I suspect that's because where I live (Toronto) the streetlights' light sensors are positioned on top and are looking up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Same here. The idea is to put enough light up there so the sensor thinks it is daylight. Neither of my TL3s (LED and incan) have any affect on the streetlight.

Start your way on the high side and work your way down - i.e. x990, Thor, Ultra Stinger, various modded small lights, etc.

Well, I tried a 3D Maglite with sputtered reflector (should cut down on throw) and Mag Xenon bulb at 113 yards. There was ambiant light, but I could definately light up a reflective 'Visitors' sign from that distance. Couldn't quite get to 150 with a straight line of sight, but from the looks of the 113 yard test, I'd imagine that 150 yards with minimal ambiant light would definately be do-able.
