I've done a little experimenting with TiN and TiCN finishes. They are very hard finishes, but they're also VERY thin. On the pieces I was messing with, the coating could be easily scraped off with a metal object - not nearly as durable on Al as HA or nickel. It seems this type of finish is better suited to a much harder substrate. The fact that there's soft Al under the thin hard coating of TiN or TiCN means the finish will flake. They are beautiful looking finishes though. They'd look great on a shelf.

Maybe others have had different experiences with it than me?
