I just picked up the most recent copy (Feb '08) of Popular Mechanics at the grocery store. As I was reading it I cam across two stories involving decent performing flashlights. On page 32, there's a small blurb in their "Wish List" section for the Gatlight V3 Titanium.
Then on page 51, Mythbuster Jamie Hyneman has an article on "Technology Run Amok". In his complaint about flashlights that run on exotic batteries, he mentions:
"I have a lovely little LED flashlight called the Fenix that puts out 1 watt, uses a single AA battery and lasts for months of use."
Finally, as I moved on to the most recent issue of Popular Science, there on page 75 in the How2.0 section is an article on constructing a MaxBlaster HID.
