Tritium Watch Advice Needed

Hi All,

I've decided that I want to purchase a quality Tritium watch and have been researching and reading for days. I have looked at just about all offerings from Traser, KHS, Luminox, S&W but I still have questions. My current line of thought is this:

Traser - Cream of the crop, expensive, pretty much makes and/or licenses the technology to all the rest. Hard to find a reseller in the states. Quality is 2nd to none.

KHS - Made by Traser, just as expensive and same quality but has slightly different stylings, like red second on their Titan MKII models (which I really like). No resellers in the US that I can find. Not too impressed with their website which doesn't seem to work right http://www.khs-watch.com Only sold on overseas sites with DOA only return policies.

Luminox - Good quality but not as good as the above. Gawdy Navy Seal markings not really my style but not all models are so intrusive. Have read of poor customer service and that they are warranty tyrants. Medium priced and widely available. I can buy these (and probably return if not satisfied) at my local Cabelas which is real a plus and I plan on taking a trip there tomorrow to look.

S&W - Okay quality, H3 vials are not so bright. Much more affordable than the rest.

My preference right now is actually on the KHS. I really like the Titan MKII which looks just like a Traser P6506 commander with a red second hand. I don't have a problem dropping the cash on one of these but what scares me is the obscure availability. The only US reseller I can find for the Traser is lapolicegear, they seem to have a good rep around here but they don't sell KHS.

My questions are:

1. Has anyone seen side-by-side comparisons of the blue vial watches and green ones? Which is brighter? The blue is cool looking but I suspect the green is brighter which is what I'd rather have.

2. If I buy a Traser it will most likely be from lapolicegear since I would prefer not to go overseas. But if I go with KHS, does anyone have any recommendations?

This place is one possibility http://www.tritiumh3watches.com/index.html They claim to be a authorized dealer but the only contact info is email. I can't even find out where they are and their forums are littered with sexually explicit SPAM which kind of raises an eyebrow.

3. I'm worried about fit, maybe I shouldn't be but a $400+ watch is a pretty substantial investment and with the return policies at most of these places being pretty much non-existent I feel like I'd better do my research and make the right choice.

4. Who do you contact for service or problems on one of these?

Thanks for any help and sorry for the long-winded post.

Regards,

NP

Here's where I bought my Luminox.

I also have a Traser from LA police gear. Here are pictures of both up close:

This may not directly answer your question, but they have been very good watches. The vials are as bright on both, but more surface area is exposed on the Luminox.

Light is what we do here, yes? ;) I think our eyes are probably more sensitive to the green than to the blue, but I could be remembering the lore and science of this incorrectly.

We bought two of the 6502 Trasers last time they were on closeout at LAPG and have been extremely satisfied. If a date window isn't a must, the current closeouts are very attractively priced.

Physically, the 6500, 6502 and 650_ with the Ti case are all the same size, I think. I have small wrists and the fit is fine. You should check the website and/or email first, but I'd be surprised if LAPG didn't have a "normal" return policy, and they are domestic. I've always had very good service from them.

I think Luminox is actually a brand of Traser (I might be wrong) - but when I researched this area as you are now I recall that the Trasers had a better track record.

www.watchmann.com is an authorized USA dealer with excellent prices and speed. The Traser site lists authorized USA dealers -- and if you buy from one, you'll be able to extend the warranty a year. I recommend him -- I'm very happy with my titanium Commander Traser watch. He was happy to check the watch for me to be sure the second hand stopped each second on the index mark (quartz watches that don't do that drive me nuts).

If you want a great 22mm leather strap for one, look at www.mywatchmaker.net for the Jumbo straps from DiModell, and he'll soon have 20 mm deployant clasps to fit. I have a black one on my Traser (a similar clasp), and had it bead blasted by Industrial Watch Works to match the Ti case.

Be very careful with the Luminox watches -- many dealers on the web and in stores are selling old stock with batteries close to dead.

Don't expect "oh my God" luminosity with these watches. They are less bright than Super Luminova watches, at first, but the glow is constant and great in the dark. The reports are that the Traser watches (and those really made by Traser) have better and brigher tritium vials than the watches branded by non-watch companies, using non-Swiss vials.

I have a traser Titan commander II and LOVE it best watch I have ever owned. I purchesed it from a seller on ebay http://myworld.ebay.com/world*of*watches/
Great service and a good price, IIRC I only paid about 370$ for a brand new all Ti watch with dated paper inside showing the age of the H3 viles. PM me if you have any questions.

This is good advice and it's why I finally bought a tritium watch - never needs "recharging."

Consider also the Martac Zulu bands that LAPG, CountyComm and others have. If it suits your dress style, they're very comfortable and secure (and not a whole lot of money).

Thanks for the great links and comments everyone.

That is a concern of mine. Is it appropriate to ask the online retailers for newest stock? When I check the Luminoxes at Cabelas this weekend I'm going to see if there are any date codes on them.

I'd go for the H3 if you're after a tritium watch.

Whats about the Marathon Navigator Wachtes at County Comm (currently sold out)? Anybody knows more about them?

PSM,

I like the look of the Luminox you have better than mine. Exact same body and band, but better trit placement and a wider viewing angle. I have also come to like the black ink in the rotating bezel instead of white.

The company you need is Ball Watches. I'm just about ready to buy one myself.
They have gas-light tubes that don't need to be charged. They're shock resistant to 7500 g's. anti-magnetic to 12000 atm and endure cold temps to -40C.
They are also fairly expensive compared to the price range you're looking at. About $1200-2000 new.

A link to advertised lume shot.

One good thing about Luminox is the wide variety of styles and sizes available. All the other brands are pretty much in the "dive/tactical" style.

I've a couple of Luminox and Marathons. No problems with any of them.

@ np,

I have a KHS navigator MK II and I'm very pleased with that watch. its very lightweight (58 grams including strap) and the timekeeping is superb (about 1 second gain in two month) if you are interested, here is another link for KHS/Traser: www.specopswatch.com

you can order direct from the KHS store, they will deliver worldwide.

when you compare the green vials against the blue vials, green wins hands down IMO. blue is cool looking yes, but its also significant less bright. that doesn't mean blue is not good to see at night, but green is just superior. on the other hand, both colours do a great job, all in all its a matter of personal choice I guess.

Well I just ordered a Traser Black Storm Pro with the NATO strap from watchmann.com, http://watchmann.com/proddetail.asp?prod=P6504BSSE.

He doesn't sell KHS anymore and although I still would have preferred the KHS Titan MKII, I talked to the owner on the phone today and he was extremely helpful and patient answering all of my questions and he's in the US and I just prefer to deal with someone in the states.

The Black Storm Pro has the red second hand that I really think makes these watches stand out. It doesn't have the titanium case (it's PVD stainless) so it will be a little heavier and not quite as tough but still a great looking and durable watch nonetheless. And it does have the sapphire lens which is nice.

He's going to install the NATO strap for me for no extra charge too. I should get it mid next week I hope. Now for the painful waiting period  .

If you decide you want more NATO-style straps, look here:

TimeFactors: http://www.timefactors.com/index.html
Howard Marx: http://www.westcoastime.com/index.html
Broadarrow.net: http://www.broadarrow.net/

TimeFactors is in the UK, but he has the highest-quality NATO-style straps. Howard Marx is in the USA, brings in the TimeFactors straps, but not everything that Eddie stocks at TimeFactors. Broadarrow has the heavy-duty Maratac straps.

NATO straps are easy to thread yourself without needing to remove the springbars (and there are plenty of instructions on the websites). I don't like the feel of the thick Maratacs, and all NATO straps can be a problem for thin wrists. Some people think they don't look good on a large watch unless you have a really thick wrist, because they're so thin. Plus the hardware can catch on stuff. Black hardware is available on some of these nylon straps, or bead-blasted matte finishes. You want stainless steel of course, regardless of the finish! The Trasers take a 22 mm strap.

The batteries on mine are good for 4-5 years, according to Traser. Some models may have 10-year batteries. Don't forget to register the watch with Traser for the extended warranty!

If you want a leather strap, that incredibly thick Di-Modell Jumbo will look great (at least I think so!). Available from MyWatchmaker: http://www.mywatchmaker.net/watchstraps/k1dmJumbo.htm and also from Freda Watch Straps: http://fredawatchstraps.com/. Freda Watch Straps also carries some straps with red stitching that you might like.

You'll have to use a standard 20 mm buckle on the Jumbo, unless you wait for the extra thick 20 mm single-fold deployant coming soon from MyWatchmaker. And if you want the finish on any of the strap hardware changed, contact International Watch Works: http://www.angelfire.com/blues/andcameysiww/Firstpage.html.

A little over a year ago, I bought a Traser 6500 and it wasn't quite as bright as the Luminox 3001. I believe there are different versions, so don't take this as an absolute recommendation, but I'm very happy with the Luminox.

Does any know of a plastic tritium watch with an alarm?

i was just htinking about this the other day!!!
