Hey guys, I've got my 3/4hp baldor 1725rpm motor that I want to put a 5/8" mandrel on to use a paper wheel sharpened for knives. Is there a better reasonably priced solution to this, such as a belt driven spindle. I cant seem to locate a spindle, I guess they're out o fashion. Anyways should I stick with a set screw on mandrel or can someone recommend a belt driven spindle or other option thanks.

I built a wire brush machine, but the arbors could just as easily hold polishing wheels.

The wire brush is belt driven by the motor mounted near the floor.

The arbor shaft is a 36" long piece of TGP shafting, threaded on each end. The shaft is supported by ball bearing pillow blocks.

The shaft drive sheave fits over a keyway on the shaft.

Not at all hard to make one like this, although I'd go with larger diameter shafting the next time. A 1.5" shaft would be about right for the 14" wheel being turned.

That's a nice rig Barry, unfortunately I don't have steel laying around or the parts or a weldor. Thinking of something much simpler and smaller, probably run 10" wheel max with very little load, power strolling knives basically.
