I have two dead leadlights in front of me. Both have the same problem. Can't get green light. The diod gives a deep red light. When the red beam i colimated it burns through plastic. But when I mount the crystals I get nothing.
Help.

polarity and alignment is CRITICAL. most sensitive is the Output coupler mirror, this is the one after the MCA, YLF, KTP, whatever you have, crystals. Mine is slightly concave on one side, this side points back to the diode. Granted, my greenie is almost 4 years old, so I am sure some bits and pieces are different.

How do you know it emmits a deep red (the red you are seeing is only a fraction of the amount of light the diode is sending out - what you are seeing is the outer limits of your eyes where the diode is not 808nm perfect)- do not look at the dot and never down the barrel - 200mw WILL cause severe damage to the retina. Why do I keep repeating myself!!! Your vision will go and you won't even see what did it. If you want to see the dangerous IR view the laser dot through an LCD viewfinder on a digi-cam. I cannot stress enough the importance and dangers that exist. BE CAREFUL!

The order as follows:

Laser Barrel inc. focusing optic.
IR Filter.
Lense.
Lense Footprint.
KTP (tiny).
Barrel (inc. Nd inside).
Lense Footprint.
Lense.
OC Miror Footprint.
OC Mirror.

I know IR reflects off of different surfaces then visible light but, but even looking at the dot from the opposite side of the barrel is still dangerous?
 
you cant see it. you can't feel it hit your eye as it doesn't have pain receptors back in there. It really is dangerous stuff.

Without a colminating lense the IR diffuses all over the place. thats why its dangerous.

probably not, but you honestly can have no idea where the IR is going without using some sort of visual aid.
 
I liked the idea (posted from bond007 on another thread) about causing alot of confusion at a party when all the balloons start popping at their own accord... brilliant.

Back to reality... another dangerous factor about IR is because you can't see it then your blink reflex doesn't work, your iris doesn't react to it, and your focus will be relaxed at distance ... just plain bad news. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
 
It is perfectly ok to link to other threads that contain valuable info, that's one of the big advantages of a discussion board.
However, if the sole purpose of a thread is to link to another one it isn't allowed.

Yes. I know there's a lot of powerful IR light and I know about the danger. Thanks for the info.
