The UglyBox lives! (named by a friend of mine)

I attempted to mimic the little box-flashlight-thingys from Star Trek:TNG.

What I ended up with was brighter with a better beam, bigger, heavier, and...well...uglier

Here's the web page that talks all about it.

Very nice! UglyBox is certainly quite beautiful to me!

That all-aluminium box is quite unique, but I'll bet it gets pretty warm after 20mins or so, huh? Great for those Russian winters, maybe ?

Idaho does get cold...not as cold as Moscow Russia though I dare say

(The tooltip for that smiley is razz) and say that those typos are creaping in

but also to say that I don't get it.

Dorcy Cool Blue and Turtlelite are almost the same. One is plastic and one is rubber. Turtlelite II has a facated reflector for more of a flood and less of a spot.

That Uglybox is dang cool!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Oops....sorry Saaby. Nobodys probably going to get that one. That probably means it's not as funny as I intended it to be.

Not to mention that I mispelled a word in the quote (darn typos). But I corrected it now.

Actually, it's a quote from that "fairly" new Dana Carvey movie. I haven't seen the actual movie yet, but in the previews, he's dressed up in a turtle outfit and is trying to get into some stupid turtle club and apparently they won't let him in.

He's got a bald head and a stupid turtle costume on and says that quote that I wrote above. It actually makes me laugh when I see it on the previews. Sorry if I confused anyone with that.

But see.....you guys were talking about a Turtle light.....and this was a kind of turtle quote.....and it was from a funny turtle scene in a movie......and see.....the whole Turtle light connection.....and the quote....and......oh......nevermind.

I'm gonna go crawl back into my shell now.

I wonder if this so called "Ugly Box" could be the start of a new trend in modding a flashlight. I mean why think in terms of round tubes - but we do have round batteries. So why not an array of LEDs in rows to form a rectangle?! Something like that would be much easier for me to build. No threading of parts - just bolt them together. And RTV for gaskets. Easier to get real glass for a covering too. Real heat sinks designed for the purpose could be used. Now if only Duracell would make square batts. As far as being too bulky to use in a practical sense - who really uses a flashlight anyway?! Well I actually used my BadBoy mod in a MiniMag tonight.

Ugly box with regulated output and a dimmer switch.

I'd buy three or four in a minute

Well, there's plenty of space in the box. you could easily fit a 1.5"x1.5" PCB between the switches, or forego the dual switches for something else (a click-on pot, for instance).

With both Luxeons turned on, it takes a good 20-30 minutes before the box starts to get warm.

Tonight I'll post pictures of the UglyBox's little brother, the UglyBlue
